bridesmaids dress question

Soo I am at the point where I am about ready to start BM dress shopping with my BMs. My question is did you pick the dress your girls would wear or did you let them pick? I have just heard conflicting information, some people say let the girls pick since they are the ones wearing the dresses, some say you pick since it might be hard to find a dress that all the girls love.

Re: bridesmaids dress question

  • I personally let my BMs pick. My main requirements were color and length. I personally think that as long as the length is about the same things tend to look pretty good. There is no rule that says it has to be the same dress. Also, keep in mind you will want to see you BMs in the dress/dresses they pick. I had a dress in mind that looked TERRIBLE on 3 out of 4 of my BMs. Thank god I saw them in it.

  • Mine are all matching. I'm not a huge fan of the mismatch look that's all the rage right now. But I did include every girl on the decision over the course of two trips and honestly, I took the opinion of my two ladies with the lower self esteem/most self consciousness into the highest consideration.

  • I picked about 6 dresses from the same designer and am going to let my BMs pick out which style they like the best for their bodies and what will make them feel most comfortable. My only requirement is that they are the same color and fabric! I like look of different styles together with the color & fabric bringing everything together.

  • I picked the dress out for them and showed them to see if they liked it. My girls LOVED it :) It's a long halter plum colored dress. My wedding dress is a halter so I knew that's what I wanted for them too. The dress really flatters them too. I got it from David's Bridal.

  • I started out thinking I'd let them pick their own dresses as long as they were the same fabric/color/designer, but once my girls started trying stuff on, I realized I only liked one style from Alfred Angelo and one style from David's Bridal. I'd say wait until you see some dresses on them before making a decision.
  • I haven't shopped yet, because my "bridesmaids" are my 11 yo & 13 yo girls. A lot of growing is going to be happening between now and then, so I'm going to wait. But what I plan to do is put them in similar fabric and color, like some of the others mentioned, and let them have a say in what the design is.

  • We are going to go in October since my sister is overseas in the military and will have leave then. That being said, we are going the "choose what you want in this color/fabric/length" route. We'll be going to David's and I'm hoping everyone will find dresses in satin, knee-length, plum styles. There are plenty of choices when it comes to neckline and hem-type (bubble, straight, flowy) that each girl will get to choose what fits her style best yet they will still coordinate. All of my bridesmaids love this idea (even my sister that hates dresses), so I'm hoping it will help make the process easier.

  • I let me girls pick their dress. I told them the color and length and they had to pick a designer and fabric. If they couldn't agree on either I'd pick for them. Thankfully they all picked chiffon dresses and luckily they were all the same designer. I gave them my opinion on the dresses and told them I could veto any that I didn't like. But that didn't happen, I like all the dresses they picked so it worked really well.

  • I had all my girls pick out their favorite styles from Alfreds and Davids that were either cotton or chiffon (hadn't decided yet but didn't want satin or anything) and I put in my favorites too.  We all ended up having 2-3 favorites in common at each store.  SO one day we went to both stores, ended up hating the Alfreds dresses, and got down to two dresses at Davids.  I secretly loved one and they all loved the other.  But they are the ones wearing it and they all agreed on it so they got the "other" one.  I still love it but the one I liked just matched my vision more.  Can you tell im a people pleaser? haha

  • I only have 2 BM, which are my daughters. I let them pick and even told them as long as the dresses were the same length, color, and fabric they could have different dresses. They actually picked the same dress.

  • MrsK, can we be BFF's IRL? We're always on the same wave length and personally, I like it. Too bad Detroit is like a million years away from me. Ahboo.

  • Yeah, like 7 hours probably. Saratoga's about three from Cuse. Actually probably more like 6 hours, Since I live about 45-hour west of Syracuse. Maybe some day, haha.

  • I was originally going to give the girls the color and length and let them pick themselves, but I'm so glad it didn't work out that way. (I wanted them to all be comfortable, but I was worried the mish-mosh might look strange.) Actually my MOHs picked out the dresses. I gave them the color, and I also went with them to check things out. I was originally thinking everyone would be in short dresses, but none of us really like the selection of short dresses at DB. They decided to try on this long, chiffon dress, and it was PERFECT. I decided right then that I wanted all the girls to wear that dress, and they all love it. My girls range from size 2-18, so I'm super thrilled about the choice and they all look fabulous! :)

  • I told them they could wear w/e they want as long as they were the right color.. then they came back at me with "well its your wedding so you pick" >_> Thanks for taking some responsibility off of me ladies lol... so they're going to end up with the same style of dress with 2 different colors

  • If you are buying them (like I am for my BMs) then your pick otherwise compromise. I made sure my briedesmaids liked the dresses that I picked but it was still my decision.
  • I picked out a bunch online, and let my two BMs that shopped with me pull others they were interested in.  We came up with a top contender and I had all the other girls try it on and encouraged them to check out others in keeping with the style I wanted, but they all loved the top pick :-)
