Cook's Registry

Where besides Bed, Bath and Beyond is a good place for two cooks to register? Williams Sonomia is so expensive and we were trying to be cautious for our guests. Thanks!

Re: Cook's Registry

  • I had great luck on Amazon. Most things from BBB were there and were cheaper (even with coupons). Could you do Amazon and Williams Sonomia? As long as you have multiple items in multiple prices ranges, you're good.
  • My issue with Amazon is that they don't have a completion discount for weddings - now a baby registry?  Heck yes, that's the best place to register because they give you 15% off before your due date.  But until they give you a completion discount on weddings also, I can't really get on board.

This really depends on what you need.  WS is expensive, but it's largely because they carry different brands than other stores.  If you do a side-by-side comparison of things that are carried both in WS and BBB or Macy's, you will find that usually (thought not always) they cost the same.  There's just not much overlap because WS has a lot more specialty tools.

We struggled with this as well, and we decided to make a very small registry at WS, primarily for some kitchen gadgets and their gold touch bakeware (which, by the way, is worth every penny) that we just couldn't find in other places.  We purposefully did not register for anything over $100 at WS because there's this impression that it's really expensive.

About half of it was purchased.  And like I said, we were careful to register only for things we really wanted that just weren't available elsewhere.  For example: silicone-tipped tongs for non-stick pans and a reversible meat tenderizer (that thing is the bomb).  We also got a pate terrine because my H is Belgian and it's a thing with his family during the holidays.

But if you are just looking for the basics - pots and pans, wooden spoons, etc. then BBB should cover you.

Other than WS, the only place I can think of that carries some really specialty cooking items is Sur la Table.  But they're a direct competitor of WS and their prices reflect it.

  • Macy's and Amazon.

There's no harm in registering at Williams Sonoma as long as you have a less expensive option. That way if people want to go in on an expensive gift together or splurge, they can. If they don't, they can buy off your less expensive registry.

  • Check out Sur La Table- fabulous kitchen stuff, but with more of a range of prices than William Sonoma.
  • We did BBB, Amazon, and Macy's.  We used the Cooks Illustrated recommendations to guide our registry, and we found most of the items we wanted at BBB and Amazon (Macy's was mainly for dishes).  We added a few William Sonoma items on Amazon's universal registry.
  • There are a lot of items under $50 at William-Sonoma.  My Fi is a chef and we registered there.  He almost died scanning all those little gadgets, and he was able to register for some stuff he wants, but wouldn't want to spend money on. Plus, WS has good deals on All Clad and knives.

  • Williams Sonoma is a great place for cooks to register.  Especially since you're registering at BBB, which offers lower priced options for guests, I'd go ahead and register at WS too.

I shop at WS all the time but didn't register there- Macy's is a great place because some of the higher-end brands that are also at WS (Le Creuset, Wustoff) are on sale quite often.
