Tahiti vs. the Seychelles

My fiance and I are trying to figure out where we are going to go for our honeymoon. We will be going during the month of July of 2012. We are looking for nice beaches, quiet, and not overly touristy. Does anyone have any input as to whether Tahiti or the Seychelles would be a better choice? What hotels would you suggest? Will the weather in the Seychelles be ok in July?
Thanks!

Re: Tahiti vs. the Seychelles

  • It's so funny that you say that because me and my fiance are deciding on those two honeymoon destinations for our 2015 wedding. I see that you posted this a while ago (oh, and by the way congratulations!) My question to you is did you ended up picking either of those two destinations? If so, which one and how was the resort, food, activities etc? Your feed back would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • I've been to both. They have a similar appeal- luxury beach destinations- but both are very different. A lot will depend on how much time you have, budget, and experience you are looking for. It took me about two full days to get to the Seychelles, so we spent 2 weeks in the area. July is also the most expensive time of year in Tahiti. Tahiti has so much more to do as well, which is funny because a lot of people see it as so remote and quiet. It is, but the Seychelles are even more so!

  • I figured that the scenery would be similar. But it's all ways better to get other peoples advice who have actually gone to these destinations. Your feed back is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • The scenery isn't quite the same. The Seychelles are granite islands, while Tahiti is volcanic. I actually stayed on the only coral island in the Seychelles while I was there! So, none of the granite boulders you see in the pics. The Seychelles beaches are a bit nicer because of being granite. Tahiti also has mix of mountainous islands and atolls (flat with lagoon in the middle.) The Seychelles are hilly, but not quite the dramatic landscape of the Societies in Tahiti.  Some of the private islands are flat, but not atolls. Of course, you won't get the OWBs in the Seychelles! You'll see villa type rooms, some with pools and nice patios.

  • I've been to Seychelles but not Tahiti, though we experienced the overwater bungalow thing on our honeymoon in Fiji. We stayed at Raffles on the island of Praslin this past July. I'll be honest - we had a great time, tons of fun for sure, but I didn't think Seychelles was 'omg amazing!!!' We absolutely preferred our private island experiences in Fiji. The beaches were beautiful and we were glad to have gone as an extension of our trip to South Africa, but I honestly wouldn't recommend flying all that distance to the Seychelles when you could have similar experiences in Fiji or Tahiti and her islands. While Raffles was amazing and the room was gorgeous, our rooms at Royal Davui and Likuliku were equally nice, albeit smaller, the service was more personalized, the experience was more unique overall, the weather was better (we were in both places in June/July), and the food was included in our price for Fiji and was definitely of higher caliber. The food prices in Seychelles are outrageous, which we expected, but even I was a little shell-shocked when a liter bottle of water was $16 at dinner. The food at Raffles was pretty disappointing; do not go to Seychelles expecting amazing cuisine. :)
