  The dress does not say flapper era to me at all. But that's not necessarily a problem, since weddings don't need a theme. Though it might not be appropriate for an outdoor wedding either. Are you going to be okay with your train getting filthy dirty from dragging across the grass?

  The gown is beautiful and if you love it, you can "Gatsby" it by getting a Gatsby era headpiece.  The Gatsby options for men's fashion are pretty endless and fairly easy.  If you want the Gatsby feel to be part of the reception, then you'll need draped pearls and ostrich feathers in the centerpieces.  The pearls can be found pretty inexpensively, but no so much with the feathers.

  I think people are more referring to the style of the Gatsby movie, the fashion, the decor, etc., not wanting an actual Gatsby wedding based on the story itself.  It's their way of saying "I'm interested in having a 1920's style wedding".  For whatever reason, that's just the go-to term for a 1920's themed wedding.  If you separate the story from the aesthetics of that movie, it was pretty damn awesome.
