Jesus, Take the Wheel - er, Hills

I can't have been the only one watching the horrific live version of The Sound of Music last night, so I also can't have been the only one crying on my couch from laughing so hard at the Twitterverse. Some of my favorite tweets included:

"Well this is the weirdest episode of True Blood I've ever seen."

"Can we just pick one accent and use that?"

"This production is like Carrie's third track on her Play On album: I wanna u-u-u-u-u-undo it!"

"I wish Julie Andrews was available for this live production of The Sound of Music, but I guess being Queen of Genovia keeps her pretty busy."

"I saw a black nun and immediately thought Whoopi Goldberg was there to steal the show!"

"NBC asks tough questions like, 'What's the most uncomfortable number of Swastikas for live national television?"

In all fairness, Carrie is a very talented singer (not actress), but it wasn't entirely her fault that the whole thing sucked. There were lots of bad factors, like the soap opera lighting, bad acting from most cast members, and sound (can we turn of the mikes during the kissing, please!?). Above all, THIS WAS A BAD IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE!

What'd you all think?

Re: Jesus, Take the Wheel - er, Hills

  • I watched. Now, I have to admit I've actually never seen the movie. I know - crazy! But watching this made me want to see the movie. Was a lot cut out? It just didn't seem believable that they were in love.
I'm not a huge Carrie fan, but I thought she did great.
And it was bizarre seeing Stephen Moyer in another role, especially one like that.
  • I only watched parts of it, because I was at work, but the parts I did see were just dreadful.

Look, I *love* the Sound of Music. I even like Carrie Underwood a lot. She's got a good voice.

But she plays up being sexy. That's her thing -- being the sweet-as-pie-sexy-girl-next-door. And she cannot, for the life of her, act her way out of a paper bag, blessherheart.

I was sort of OK with the idea of a remake, especially since they did the Broadway version and didn't try to make a movie out of it (even though the TV version was essentially a live movie).

But yeah, the parts of it I saw....not good.

Go watch the movie. I am walking down the aisle to Adelweiss from the movie.

I DVR'd the Carrie Underwood version last night but haven't watched it yet. I can't decide if I should delete and make room for more Castle reruns or watch it with wine and mock it.

  • I tried to convince FI to watch it, but we both hate sound of music, so didn't watch it... kinda glad I didn't now.

  • LOL!!!! DH and I were flipping through the channels and did a double take "go back go back!! was that.... Carrie Underwood? wth? click info, what IS this? It looks like a high school play... Oh. My. God. It's The Sound of Music. Made for TV. FOR 3 HOURS!!"

At first we poured a drink and said we'd take a sip every time there was bad acting. And after about 30 minutes we realized we had to work today, so we just turned it off.

This. So much this. Because I love me some Castle! And also because SOM was such a train wreck, why bother? It's like @southernbelle915 said, even if you make a drinking game out of it, you'll never make it through. Maybe especially if you make a drinking game out of it.

Forgive me, Knotties, I'm either having TK or computer problems. @ClimbingBrideNY, please go see the movie immediately. And my rage has nothing to do with anything being cut. There are some idiots out there who are whining about songs being misplaced, but these people are not aware this was a production of the Broadway musical, not the original film.

  • We watched half and I recorded it to finish today. Her acting wasn't good but she did great singing. Definitely not Julie Andrews (I'm watching hers tonight lol) but still was pretty cool to see live on tv. I feel bad for all the hate she's going to see on twitter for this
  • I will most definitely be watching the movie this weekend! I do remember that the movie wasn't the original - it was adapted from the stage version. Apparently last night had elements of both?
  • I thought it was okay. Carrie can't act, but some of her costars were worse. It was fun, in my opinion. Nobody will ever ever ever replace Julie Andrews. She is charm and innocence and fun personified.
  • I love the Sound of Music and got excited when I saw a promos for the show last night. I ended up forgetting about it until H was flipping through the channels and stopped because he saw Stephen Moyer and knows how much I love True Blood. He doesn't watch the show and thought it was a really bad episode.

We watched it for maybe 5 minutes, just long enough for one song before we both had enough. Watching that train wreck has just made me really want to watch the movie so bad. H hasn't seen it yet so I'm thinking it sounds like a good plan for tonight.

On the upside Carrie has an amazing voice that I hadn't noticed before. I'm not an American Idol or country music fan so I haven't heard a lot of her songs. I think that's also going to be something I do tonight.

  • I watched until the thunderstorm scene. I couldn't handle the bad acting.

Another thing to remember is they were doing the stage vs. not a remake of the movie, so there are going to be differences.  I learned this after the fact, but it didn't change the horrible acting.

I have to disagree re: the difference between stage & screen actors.  Any number of excellent musical actors can act.  Stage actors actually have to be better actors than screen in my opinion because they have to be able to emote and get a reaction from people way up in the balcony who can't "see" the stage.

  • Not a fan of Carrie U.  I dont like the sound of her voice.  Didnt watch!

I will watch anything Nathan Fillion is in.

  • Of course it was awful, it's The Sound of Music! *blargh*

The Nazis are the best part of that horrible show. . .

because most people have never seen the stage production and are only familiar with Julie Andrew's movie, so when the Nazis hit the stage people are like "WTF?!" and it's funny.

"Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends time and space."

  • I have seen the movie but not the stage production (but I knew they weren't remaking the movie).

I also has mixed feelings on the production.  The acting wasn't the best, but the music was great!

I think most people are forgetting this was done LIVE.  There wasn't an option to do something over if Carrie got nervous and forgot her lines or if a tree falls over.

I admire Carrie greatly for having the guts to take this on knowing that she would get vilified in the press for her lack of acting ability.

  • I love Carrie Underwood.  I love the Sound of Music.  I have not seen the live version but I've heard it wasn't that great.  Frankly, it's not Carrie's fault.  She is not an actress, period.  I read an article that said the reason NBC picked her was because they needed a big name to pull in viewers to make it worth it.  And a Broadway star is not gonna do that.  And the rest of the actors are all just that, actors.  So obviously, next to professional actors and actresses, she won't look near so good.
  • I definitely give Carrie mad props, but even she had to know it was a risky gamble! It was live, and that adds a dimension of difficulty, but Carrie's done live plenty of times: performances, awards shows, etc.

Ugh it was just so bad.

  • I didn't watch it, but I read Jezebel's article on the five first moments, complete with clips, and I came away glad that I didn't see the whole thing and really wanting to rewatch the movie.  That's on the agenda for today.
