where to buy dress for out of state wedding

I'm about to start wedding dress shopping (yay!) but wondering where to purchase the dress for my out-of-state wedding.  We're living in Las Vegas (or at least, we will be, cuz we're moving there in a month) but the wedding is happening in Wisconsin.  I'm going to be in WI for the holidays along with all my family and bridesmaids so I'm hoping to find my dress then, but I'm unsure if I'd rather buy the dress in the wedding location and deal with rushed fittings since I'll only be in town a few times before the wedding, or buy it where I live to have easy fittings, and deal with how to transport the dress.

Any tips?  Anyone else gotten a dress out of state? Thanks!

And any other tips on planning an out of state wedding would be greatly appreciated - I'm just getting started in this whole planning process.

Re: where to buy dress for out of state wedding

  • I'd suggest buying near where you're living.  I think it'd be easier to transport the dress than to try and fit in fittings (see what I did there? hah) when you happen to be in WI.

    Good luck!
  • Is there a specific place you'd want to buy from?  I live in GA with my FI but our wedding is in my home state of MD.  I bought my dress while I was in MD for Thanksgiving so that my mom and BMs could be there and I'm having it shipped to my house in GA.  I went to David's Bridal because I knew they were all over the country so I can easily take it to one here in GA for fittings.  Also, I got them to waive the shipping price for sending my gown here because they have free shipping online (obviously losing the price of my shipping was worth her making commission on a $1150 sale).  So if you're looking at a specific place/ designer, check into the stores/ places the designer is sold in both states.  I know I loved being home to buy my dress and my sister in law actually is the one who selected it and I would have never chosen that style without her.
As far as other tips for planning out of state...
It gets hard to book things and put down deposits when you can't just make a quick trip to places.  We visited our venue during a trip home over the summer and then paid for it over the phone (they have a rule that you can only book a date one year in advance so we had to wait for that date).  Also, it has definitely helped us that my mom has been getting in contact/ meeting with people (like our two catering options, our DJ, and our photobooth) since she is in MD.  That way, people who won't allow payments over the phone for whatever reason, can just be paid in person/ have contracts signed in person and I can just send money to my mom.  At first, I really wanted to handle everything on my own, but now I am more than thankful that my mom has become so involved and wants to help us out.
I also bought "The Bride's Book of Lists" to help organize everything.  It has a bunch of space to write down your options for each thing (venue, caterer, music, etc.).  The book made it easier for me so I didn't confuse two different places for the same service for comparison since it's not like I can just stop into them whenever.
    Hope this helps!

  • Here is what I'm doing. I lived in Oregon, we're getting married in Oregon, but I currently live in California. My mom shipped me my dress, and then I am getting it altered here. I actually get to go see it today for the last time before shipping it back. Instead of packing it with you, ship it to somebody close to you that lives there (which it sounds like you have) then have them just take it to get it steamed before the wedding.
