Updating address book

What's the best way to update your address book? Just ask everyone for their address? Even though FI and I are waiting until spring 2016 to get married, I heard from a couple people that it's a good idea to update the address book. Has anyone done this pre-wedding planning?

  • I used the excuse of sending out Christmas cards (which I also did) but now I have 95% of my guest lists addresses!

  • I got a (cool) address book and contacted my mom to get family addresses on the grounds that now that I had my own place, I should have them. Those that we weren't sure of, we asked for updates.
  • I just asked (through email). Almost no one asked me why I was asking.

  • Yep :-)

I primarily used FB but I also made a point to ask my mom about birthdays and phone numbers for a few relatives to start me out. I would send out a FB message just saying

    "Hey Family Member,
Haven't seen you in a long time. I was just reading your post about X. (insert discussion about X here)"

and then would wait for a reply. Then after they replied answer back and add at the end,
"I don't seem to have your phone number! We need to stay in touch more often." and also slip in,
"What's your address? I would love to come and see you one of these days if I ever get (near where you live)."

Honestly, mine has been very casual :-)
  • I would use Facebook, texting, phone call, parents, etc... You would be surprised though with how many addresses change within a year. I wasn't even engaged for a year and many of my friends and even some family moved so I had to update the addresses more than once during that time period.

So if you do an update now, I would do another maybe as it gets closer to when you send out STDs or invitations just to make sure you don't receive a lot of returned mail.
  • No one asks why you're asking if you ask around Christmas...they will think it's for Christmas cards...it's always a good time to update, like smalfrie19 said.

This is what I did too. Plus I enjoyed sending out Christmas cards! :)

Ditto. I felt more like an adult now that I sent Xmas cards. And I'm 38. Gotta grow up some time.
  • If people are homeowners (not sure if this works with renters) and you have most of the information, you could also find some online.
