Secret Santa

This is my first year participating in a secret santa for my office and I'm wracking my brain trying to think of a good gift for the lady I got. Any ideas? What's the best/ worst secret santa gift you've ever got?

Re: Secret Santa

  • Look up the white elephant thread on here. I know there was a few ideas in there.

I have to do a grab bag for my family so I have to find a $25 gift that could work for aunts, uncles, siblings, etc. No idea what to do. I wish they just all loved wine.

  • I usually try to do something general for secret santa, like a gift card.

  • This is why I'm basically the Grinch and am terrrrrrified of the holiday season. Haha, I suck at this but my go-to strategies are usually the following:
    • I don't know if your office had everyone fill out a little list of things your person likes, but I would go by that first and foremost. If not, try to think about things your person shows an interest in. Have they always got a Dunkin Donuts cup in the morning? Any sports team memorabilia all over their cube? Try to contribute to that.
    • I know a lot of people aren't a fan of gift cards because they're not "personal," but they are a safe way to go and I for one always end up being super-grateful for them when I get to use them! Think of fun places to eat near your office, their favorite stores, or a generic Target or Macy's is always nice.
    • Unless you know she's on a specific diet or doesn't like sweets or whatever...FOOD. CANDY. Those are always good.
    • I try to do a little gift bag or something whenever I participate in Secret Santa. Combining some of the above would work, and maybe throw in an item like gloves, nice lip balm, those cute little stress-relieving hand sanitizers at Bath and Body Works...I dunno.
    Good luck to ya!
  • At my office, on the slip we sign up on, we give 3 suggestions which really helps. I usually just put down GC suggestions. I would say a GC to Starbucks is usually safe. Or, maybe some nice scented candles if she seems like that type?

  • Thanks for the help! I think I just tend to overthink these things.

  • Christmas oriented stuff like candles, ornaments, etc. are good for women.  A scarf.  A nice throw blanket.  If she's a coffee drinker then a bag of coffee and a nice mug set.  Depends on what kind of limit you all have set as well.

  • Gift Cards - 2014 Calendar - Candles - other Smelly items (if doing smelly items, try to stay with 'safe' scents like vanilla).

I know I've put together my own little baskets too - my favorite one I did was I got a colander as the basket, a couple local spaghetti sauces, local dried pasta noodles, thing of olive oil - wrapped it all up.  Could do a movie basket by getting a popcorn bucket as the basket - a movie - then some candies and popcorn.

  • Everyone has given some great ideas! For secret santa, I usually will put together some sort of gift basket or maybe buy a cute holiday coffee mug and put a packet of hot chocolate with marshmallows in it. Last year my H's extended family did a secret santa and the amount was $20 a gift. We received a popcorn maker and a smores maker. We use them both a lot so those can be some ideas.
  • I second the idea of a nice vanilla scented candle, and if you're sure you are giving a gift to a woman, I always like a pretty jewelry travel container (Container Store has some). I feel it's something no one buys for themselves, but it's so much nicer than putting jewelry in a Ziploc when traveling.
