I couldn't sleep and I was bored so I decided to do some late night grocery shopping. It had to get done and what better time to do it then when no one else (or very few people) are at the store.
Anyway, I was at the checkout and the cashier noticed my engagement ring. She stated how she thought it was really pretty. I thanked her. She asked where FI got it from and I told her that it actually belonged to my grandmother on my dad's side and he gave it to my FI when FI asked my father for his blessing.
The cashier got a weird look on her face but didn't say anything.
At this point the lady in line behind me, blurted out "Seriously? Your grandmother's ring? Isn't that creepy?". I noticed from the corner of my eye that the cashier was nodding in agreement to the customer behind me.
Before I had a chance to answer, the lady turns to her daughter who is maybe 16 at the time and says "hunny, please tell me you don't want to wear your grandmother's ring when you get engaged". Her daughter gets a smirk on her face and tells her mom "I would be honored to wear grandma's ring when I get engaged. I think it's sweet" and then winked at me as she went back to doing whatever it was on her phone. I couldn't help but smile as her mom had a look of shock on her face.
I wanted to say something but I figured nothing I could say at this point would compare to the shock from her daughter. The cashier wouldn't look at me after that either.
