[QUOTE]If you want to see the petroglyphs, do the guided tour. Ours was lead by a Hawaiian and he explained the cultural significance of the petroglyphs and interpreted the images for us. It was a really amazing experience, and we learned a lot about Hawaiian culture and customs. Seeing them is cool, but understanding why they are there and what they mean is much better.

Lia- I'm totally curious where this was at? We had a petroglyph area near our hotel. It was just something that you could walk through.

[QUOTE]I agree the Mauna Kea tour is expensive, but it was our favorite thing that we did hands down. It was well worth it. .

We are honeymooning on the Big Island in August, and this was the one tour that we booked.  I'm glad to hear it is worth the money.  I'm looking forward to it!

  • I LOVE the Big Island!  H and I did a lot of scuba diving while we were there and it was excellent.  The most unique thing we did there was a night manta ray dive, but they also have a snorkel option for that tour, so I highly recommend doing it either way.  You can look up videos on youtube that show wha that experience is like, but it's awesome to see it in person.

Also, get the Big Island Revealed book, it has great info on cool sites to check out!

The one thing I'll always remember is going to see the cliffs at South Point/Ka Lae. It was a bit of a drive (we did have a rental car) but the view is just gorgeous.

  • We just got back from the big island a couple weeks ago.  There are two things we did, that we absolutely loved. We went zip lining through skyline eco tours.  It was a 7 line course and the last zip was amazing. It was a half mile long and went over a beautiful waterfall.

We also did the Hawaii Forest and Tour Twilight Volcano Hike. That was amazing. Our guide was fantastic and it was pretty cool to see the Volcano at at night. Also, some people we met their did the Mauna Kea star tour through them and they said that it was pretty awesome.

Also, H doesn't like to snorkel, but we wanted to see the manta rays. There is a restaurant at the Sheraton in Kona called Rays on the Bay. The food was delicious and they have a deck where they put spotlights into the ocean and you can see the manta rays. That was pretty amazing too!

Hope you have an amazing trip!

  • I have to agree with PP on Hawaii Forest and Trail. We did 2 tours with them (Mauna Kea and the waterfall one) both times they were fantastic and both guides were amazing. We were on the Mauna Kea tour with some people who did the Coffee and Volcanoes one that is early in the morning. They said that was really good as well.

  • I was there in Oct for a destination wedding - not sure where you are staying but we stayed on the West Coast of the Island. If you are renting a car I would recommend driving about 1-2 hours North to the Pololu Valley (it's basically as far North as you can drive) - they have an amazing private black sand beach that is about a 15-20 min walk. The drive is beautiful as well!

  • I actually live on the Big Island. Its such an awesome place. When I moved here, I was somewhat surprised at the lack of sandy beaches. Most are lava rock. So depending on where you are staying, I suggest checking out Hapuna beach, Kua Bay (finally got the sand back after the big winter swells) and Magic Sands.

If the H doesn't care for snorkeling, Kahalu'u Beach is great. You can stand up at any given time (don't on the coral) and it's protected so its pretty mild. It always has a ton of sea turtles too!

And if you love ahi ,the Poke Shack south of Kona is the best! Have a great time:)

Kahaluu had the most amazing snorkeling!! One of my favorite parts of our trip :)
