brainstorm with me please

The winery where I work is trying to think of a promotion to get more customers in on Superbowl Sunday, whether it be focused in females or both sexes.  It is a notoriously slow day.  Any thoughts?

Re: brainstorm with me please

  • I'm sorry, I'll be useful in a second, but OMG YOU WORK IN A WINERY??? That's so cool!! My MOH scheduled three winery tours for my bachelorette party, and it was so much fun!!

    OK, being useful.

Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014. Super Bowl XLVIII. Where do you live, geographically? Is there any chance your team might make it to the Super Bowl?

hahah, it's a ton of fun.  I really do it for the free wine and discounts at all the other wineries. . . . it's a nice break from my day job.  I'm on Long Island, and although I don't care the slightest about football, i'm pretty sure the NY area teams are sucking hardcore this year.
  • They are -- BUT the Super Bowl is being played in Giants Stadium, which is local to you, so that's a selling point.

One angle to appeal to female customers (or just... more refined customers who are likely to go to a winery) would be to contrast a typical/lowbrow Superbowl party with what your job will be offering.  Like, one side of the poster has burly guys in jerseys eating cheese dip and drinking cans of beer, contrasted with sophisticated-looking customers cheering at the game, wine in hand.  Or you could play up the local aspect of things-- I assume a winery on LI is probably using local grapes?  Something like, "The Superbowl is local this year.  Make sure you toast with a local wine."  That's not the greatest slogan but I think it's another angle you could try.

  • Hmmm... Superbowl, middle of winter, on a Sunday, starts after dinner and goes late...

What are your normal business hours on Sunday?

I would totally go to a "sophisticate superbowl sunday" where you have it on quietly. Where there are no screaming, rowdy fans, but quiet conversation and healthy snacks. You could have wine for 30% off or something and have cheap healthy snacks that go well with wine like fruit, cheese, crackers and an antipasto tray or something. The things I dislike the most about superbowl sunday are the crowds, the unhealthy snacks, and the noise. Get rid of those things AND offer me a discount and I'm all over it. You could make it a "1st annual" thing so that it becomes a tradition with groups of people who don't like all the hubbub of typical SBS.

  • You may have trouble getting customers in this year because the Super Bowl is being held in NYC  this year.  People outside of the immediate area won't want to get out and deal with the extra traffic and people.

  • If you want people there on Superbowl Sunday, do you have large screen TV's to watch the game? Or are you trying to attract the non-football crowd?

Maybe have a non-football party, focused on attracting the "football widows" for some sophisticated socialization away from the testosterone and grunting. :)

Maybe even go with same theory for a football party, too.

  • Pre-Game tasting? But honestly, I feel like it would probably be easier to close. I can't think of one person I know that would want to do a wine tour on Super Bowl Sunday. The only thing I can think of is maybe a 'Ladies afternoon out' kind of thing. A little sexist, but in my circle, all the men watch the game and the women hang out and eat.

We are much far enough away that we won't have any extra traffic from it.
  • Super Barolos! Assuming you serve that type of wine ;)
Wear your favorite team's apparel and get a discount.
Throw a football through a tire (or waterer) get a free wine glass or discount.

I love the football widow idea! I know when I was with my ex I would have been excited for a girls day out during the Super Bowl.

  • I agree with definitely tying food into it, and aim it more at women than men. I used to work at a winery, too, and anything "girls' day/night out" always went over well. We also collaborated a lot with other local businesses to cross-promote, like bringing in a chef from a local restaurant to give a seasonal cooking seminar, or a local spa would bring in products for people to sample while they drank their wine.
