Grinch moment

Ugghhh.  My job is getting ridiculous with Christmas right now.  First we had to each chip in $28 for gifts for secretaries and support staff.  Apparently we get them cash every year because they complain about anything else.  Then we paid $50 for the Christmas party, which was meager dinner at a restaurant 40 minutes away (although it did have open bar).  It wasn't  optional, it was mandatory.

Now, I overheard someone saying that they are getting their secretary a separate gift on top of the cash.  There are 4 secretaries in the room, each has 3-4 lawyers assigned to them.  Here is the conundrum, if one person gets their girl something, they all do.  If one group gets their girl something, we all do.  I am going broke with all this nonsense!!!

  • I would put my foot down!

  • I would also tell people that you're not in a position to contribute this year. They can't make you spend your money on stuff.
  • That's totally ridiculous!
  • What is this? It's the season of giving. Not bleeding people dry! I don't think you should have to be forced to give a gift to anyone. It's like the co-workers who adopt the families, then make you feel bad if you don't contribute. You don't know what I do to help the needy, because I don't feel the need to blast it all over to make myself look good.
  • I will never understand why coworkers feel the need to force people to open their wallets at work. It's one of the reason's I'm happy to be unemployed. I think the slight difference between my old check and unemployment ends up being the same now that I'm not shelling out cash every time someone gets knocked up or the department decides to get an xmas or bday gift for the managers.

Just say you don't have cash on you or you forgot until after xmas is over.

  • As an executive assistant (aka secretary), I'm sorry.  My bosse are always very generous during the holidays, but I would certainly never expect anything, specifcially not cash.

I agree that you shoud put your foot down stating that this is all you can contribute (if anything).  The fact that your holiday party is mandatory and you have to pay for it is ridiculous.

  • Ridiculous. I'd stop contributing.
