Where to Start - newly engaged

Hi to everyone.  This board is going to be a great help to me.  I'm newly engaged and ready to go.  Now where do I start...lol

Re: Where to Start - newly engaged

  • Congratulations!

First, start with your date, budget, and approximate guest list.  If anyone is offering to pay, get an idea of their budget (plus they get input on the guest list since they're paying), and then sit down with FI to figure out your part of the budget and who you want to invite.

Obviously $5,000, for example, buys a very different wedding for 200 guests than 40 guests, you know?

Once you know your budget and approximate guest list, then you can start looking at venues for ceremony and reception.  Contact your church if you're getting married there, or look for another place to get married if not.  Then start looking at venues.

This board can be really helpful in giving feedback about venues and other vendors you'll need.  Also check out the other boards on the knot for help in cost-saving tips, etiquette, etc.  Good luck!

  • Congrats on your engagement!! I started by choosing an approximate time to get married, and a very general guest list. Once I knew approximately how many people we were inviting it was easier to start looking at venues. If you're planning your wedding far in advance then you will have options for venues, but if you're planning a short engagement you could be limited. If you need more help from local brides let me know. I'm a part of a MeetUp group called Houston Brides to Be. We meet for Happy Hour twice a week to exchange ideas and hear stories from other brides recently married in Houston. http://www.meetup.com/Houston-Brides-to-Be/
