Using china every day?

What do you think about using china as your everyday dishes? We are thinking about only registering for fine china and no other dishes--is it durable enough to use all the time? We don't have a dishwasher (and might not ever have one) so we will have to hand wash everything anyway. I do have 6 place settings of some everyday dinner ware (pflatzgraff heritage) that were hand-me-downs, so I could use those for microwaving things. Am I crazy to even consider using china every day?

Re: Using china every day?

  • I registered for Macy's Hotel Collection Bone China and I have every intention of using them every day.

If you do this make sure that you can put the dishes in the microwave (no metal bands).

  • I prefer the china with the metal bands, but I know not to use it in the microwave. I don't mind that inconvenience--I'm just wondering if it will hold up to daily use or if anyone knows anyone who uses china every day.
  • Yes it should.  It's much stronger than everyday.

You may wear it out eventually, but not as quickly as you would wear out everyday.

I registered for the exact same collection.  I too intend to use it everyday.  It casual enough for everyday use and you can dress it up for holidays.

I now have all 12 place settings (I used gift cards and returns to get three 12 piece setting since I didn't need the coffee mugs) and I can't wait to use them!  I still have the low rim bowls and 4 mugs left on the registry.

If you get the 12 piece settings be sure to check the pieces carefully.  All three sets had one busted bowl...  I know they are pretty durable for looking/feeling so fragile, but I am slightly concerned with the breakage.  Macy's replaced them without question  but still.

Oh, and I put stainless steel chargers on my Crate & Barrel registry and they look great together!  You don't see much of the charger because the dinner plates are so large, but they still look really nice together.

  • @Aprilh81 we registered for the square settings.  I thought about chargers, but I'm not sure how it will look, round charger with a square plate.  We also only registered for 8 settings because thats all we can fit at our table, is 8 chairs.  I feel like if we need more we can always purchase them ourselves.

These look great...I bought my dishes a few years ago and they are starting to get brittle and chip easily so I'm excited to register for some. My fiance and I are very plain people and I was afraid of finding "plain" dishes but these look like they will fit the bill! And I'm all about life is short, use the darn china! What's the point of keeping it in a hutch for 362 days a year.

They may be "plain" but they are so easy to dress up with a pretty place mat or a charger.  I always worry when I look at patterns or colors that they will look dated in just a few years.

Plus, bone china is one of the most durable (if not THE most durable) material for dishes.  It doesn't chip or break nearly as easily as stone ware.
