Bridesmaids dresses - do colors matter with season?

I'm having a small debate with my coordinator about what colors of dresses go with certain seasons. our colors are soft yellow, a very light cream, soft/pastel grey, and navy blue. We are getting married in the middle of summer. The ceremony and reception will be indoors. I have loved the thought of navy blue long length dresses for the ladies, darker colors are flattering and they feel more formal to me. We also like the thought of the groomsmen in navy blue tuxes with yellow and grey bouts. and yellow and grey bouqets for the ladies. I'm not too concerned about the bridal party getting too hot during our outdoor photos in the dark colors. Our coordinator thinks that navy may be too dark for our wedding colors and the dark dresses make the wedding seem dark for such a summery time and is more of a fall/winter color. I think the navy is elegant. So do you think navy is an acceptable summer color? And what colors even go with certain seasons?

  • I think it's fine. The only time colors would seem odd to me is if they were in-your-face seasonal (red, white, and blue wedding in January, red and green wedding in March, etc).

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I think navy dresses are fine for any season.
  • Yes, navy is a perfectly acceptable summer color - especially when paired with yellows and creams. I think your coordinator is worrying you over nothing.

However, I think navy tuxes sound horrible (very 1970s). Tuxes should really only be black. What about doing gray suits for the men? I think gray and navy with yellow and cream flowers sounds lovely.  A navy dress isn't going to overheat anyone indoors. Just don't take 2 hours worth of photos outside (honestly, I'd be more worried about the guys in suits/tuxes - those things are hot!)

  • You ladies rock! Thank you for your insight. Grey tuxes were our alternatives. Glad to get an opinion on that as well. We wanted to stray away from typical whites and blacks so grey and creams were what paired best with the navy and yellow. Thanks so much ladies!

  • I was going to say it depends on the area. I'm originally from California and I always saw an assortment of different colored BM dresses. Never looked weird or out of place.

Now I live in upstate NY and compared to Cali's seasons, the colors here in NY really POP at you. Here in NY if you're wedding is in like Oct/Nov you usually go with the fall colors to go with the fall foliage that is surrounding you. Wearing the pastel blue or yellow is kind of weird against the backdrop. (Just my exp. from seeing the weddings at my work)

I think Navy is perfectly fine. For spring/summer or fall/winter (I'm bias though because that is my fave color lol)

I am biased since Navy is my favorite color and one of my wedding colors. I think navy is acceptable at any time it really is just all about what you pair it with. My friend is getting married in summer and wanted navy and I suggested she pair it with a "summer" color since navy goes with anything. She chose coral and it looks fabulous. Since you are pairing it with a summer color like yellow I think it will be beautiful. If you are concerned make it the lesser of your accent colors. Subtle little pops would be gorgeous with yellow and grey. I know you said you liked navy floor length dresses but wouldn't it look pretty to have a yellow dress with a blue sash or something too? Just an idea of course.
  • I live in California and have read that my colors. (plum, champagne, ivory and a lighter purple) are perfect for a fall wedding but i am getting married in spring indoors only because by fall ill be broke! lol I dont really pay attention to seasons and colors just choose your favorites. So I wouldn't even notice something like "that color is not in season"
  • Lol, you're not biased. Well, I had thought of yellow dresses when we originally chose yellow and grey and white for our colors. But it didn't feel very formal. We're going for super formal. So we exed out short dresses, anything that felt too casual for a wedding. But since we switched our colors up a bit (see example below) we wanted it to still have a hint of summer, which is why we chose the pastel yellow but also have a strong formal color to it as well which is why we chose navy.

  • For the most part, I don't think it's necessary to coordinate colors of dresses with the season. It's a nice touch, but certainly not a big deal.

My cousin did have her BMs wear red in the middle of summer and I thought it looked odd, but it was her wedding, not mine! I think navy in summer would be just fine though.
