Okay Snarky Brides, I want your input! I sat down and met with a florist the other day for the first time ever and thought it went well. Then today, I got her "quote":

The total is $ 525.00 plus tax it includes all the personals for 19 people in your bridal party and loose flowers for the reception for 140 guests.
Floral Menu: Roses and babies breath
Color Menu: Blush and white
Accents: Natural looking adding textures

That's exactly what the e-mail said.  I scrolled down to the bottom looking for an attachment that would have detailed information (such as the cost of each bouquet, etc), but nothing. Is this typical?  My coordinator is the one arranging the "loose flowers" in all of the centerpieces that day, so I was hoping to see how many stems/bunches would be included in that. I forwarded the e-mail to my coordinator because she is the one who suggested the florist, but I'm not going to drop $500+ based off of a few sentences in an e-mail. I worked as a wedding consultant for a few years in a bakery and never sent out such vague "quotes", so I'm just so very confused. Am I totally off base?

Re: Floral "Quote" - Updated

  • That's a steal. She may just be informal. Does she have pics to share?
  • Even if the florist is not doing the actual arranging of the centerpieces and/or bouquets the quote should have something like this:

6 white polo roses $x per stem, $x total
7 bunches baby's breath, approximately x stems per bunch, $x bunch, $x total
    etc.

You are well within your rights to ask for a more detailed quote so you know EXACTLY how much you are getting for your money.

That being said that is a wonderful quote.  :)

  • It's a great price, but I'd also want to break it down into what, exactly, you get for that price.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Uhh, yeah, I'd email back and ask if you can have this itemized for sure.

My florist quote states specifically what flowers will be in what bouquet/centerpiece as well, which was fantastic for comparing values/prices. I've got number of stems that will be in the centerpiece as well.

I also would want to know her specific tax rate/delivery fees. If she's giving you what you want, it's a steal, but I'd want to clarify.

  • That's definitely a great price, but you should receive an itemized contract with the terms of service in them as well, and a deposit amount to hold the date.

  • Good price, but quote is vague. But take my opinion with a grain of salt- I went through costco to get all my floral, so it's cheap, pre arranged, all I have to do is water them and stick them in vases.
  • That's a great price for the amount of flowers you need, but definitely email her back requesting a breakdown of the price.

  • I think that is an awesome price! Were paying almost double for our flowers. I would also get a price breakdown, like PP's have stated. This gives you a look at what you are getting each set for, and describes in detail of the flower arrangements. Our florist did that, and it made it so much easier for me to understand.

  • That price seems pretty good, but definitely get an itemized list!
  • Thanks ladies! Yeah I loved the price but I was concerned about the vague wording.  Thankfully my coordinator has taken the reins and decided she will go meet with the florist and get all of the details.  I'm a full time college student  and my Christmas break ended yesterday, so I don't have time to haggle with vendors!

  • Can I just say I'm jealous of your price? And, my florist did the same. I had to ask for a break down.

  • I've received quotes like that (not from a florist). They basically just sent me what they were doing because we had already discussed the details and gave me a price. Once I said I wanted to use them they created a contract that had all of the specifics in it and terms of service and deposit amounts.

  • As PPs said that's a really great price! I would definitely email her back and ask for more detail and a breakdown of costs, though.

  • Update:  my coordinator met with the florist this week (since she has worked with the shop before) and I sent her an e-mail with the list of exactly what I want.  I was very specific and explained that I wanted to know the price difference between doing the BM's bouquets with one type of flower and then a price for their bouquets with a mixed grouping of flowers (This is one example).

So today, my coordinator e-mails me and there is no mention of different prices, but instead what the florist will give me for $525.  I already know what she was going to give me, we went over that already, I'm asking for the individual costs of items to make a judgement to how much I want to spend.  She said she pressed the florist for an itemized list but explained that the florist will not do so until the deposit is made.   Am I being crazy for wanting different prices on items??

I don't think you are. Some florists are like that I gathered from looking myself. The florist I went with was able to ball park for me, like if I used all hydrangeas it would be between this cost and this cost, but if I did a flower mix with such and such flowers it would be between this price and this price, depending on local flower availability.

Myself, at this point I would go to the florist myself and have a talk. I don't really know what I'm agreeing to pay for off what they gave you, so why would I agree to pay for it?

    *STUCK*

Well I'm glad I'm not crazy for thinking so,I was starting to get concerned.

I'm frustrated because I have already gone out and met with the florist and she was supposed to write up the quote and send it to me.  She gave me the original amount with everything grouped together and when my coordinator stepped in and offered to go get more info the florist said it wouldn't be a problem.  Now, a month later *almost*, the florist tells my coordinator that she doesn't write up an itemized list until you place a deposit.  I'm really only mad that she didn't say that up front when I asked for one a month ago, and let me think for all this time that she would give one to my coordinator.

I do love the price thought.  Argh.
