Snow Day

I'm snowed in with -30 degree weather. Brrrrrr! Definitely a bad time to visit future in-laws! What are you ladies up to today?

Re: Snow Day

  • We got back from Cuba last night.  +30C to -28C.  Not impressed.  We're relaxing and unpacking today.  Going to get pizza tonight cos we have no food to cook yet.  Trying to drag my behind into the shower but feeling very unmotivated at the moment

  • We just got over a major snowstorm here in NJ. Friday was our snow day, so it's back to work tomorrow. :( It'll be my first full week back to work since like the first week in December. Shoot me now.
  • we have 8+ inches with another 4+ expected.   I work from home so no snow day for me.  DH is OOT for work, actually had to fly out yesterday to Austin. Lucky him.

  • We have snow falling fairly heavily now, and freezing rain expected overnight. Reeeeeally praying for a snow day, since we didn't get one on Friday.

  • @lyndausvi Very lucky DH! I'd love to be back in TX. Seven inches of snow with several more expected to fall isn't very pleasant.
  • We're under a "polar vortex" and seeing very cold temps. At last check, it was -21 F with wind chill of -48. Wind chill was -51 earlier today, though. All the local K12 schools have tossed it in, but our workplaces haven't yet, so BF and I have work tomorrow ... damn, it's gonna be a cold-ass morning.

He is making fun of me.  Worse part is we live in an apartment and the guy in my siggy needs to go out from time-to-time.  Tomorrow's high is -12 (not including wind chill).     Here's to hoping he is quick to do his business tomorrow.

  • Lol. My fur babies hate the weather so much that they stop right outside my door as soon as the hit the grass to do their business. Gross, but so nice to not have to wait around coaxing for 10 or 15 minutes!
  • Chef loves the snow.   We went out to the courtyard with neighbor dogs (EB puppy and 2 pugs). They had a blast.   It was in the 20's so they were good.   Below zero  is a completely different story.

  • It's 60 here, and I am watching Lifetime movies.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I'll bet when he gets out there he'll be REAL quick to do his business.
We have 8ish inches with another 3-4 expected.  Schools here are closed to include Michigan State (I have literally seen them close maybe twice?).  Waiting to hear about a rumored admin leave tomorrow at the State Headquarters where I am a temp contractor.  If they shut the place down I don't get paid....but, this weekend is drill weekend and I will happily go in to make up the time.  I haven't done a drill weekend in almost 2 years.

My FSIL is full time in the Indiana Army National Guard and he is on stand-by.  2 units are already activated and his is next up.  He is ready and probably kind of geeked if I know him.

Our public school has only cancelled tomorrow but with the wind chills they are going to have to call off Tuesday also.  The kids can't be at the bus stop in -20 to -30 windchills.  The grandkids are are already called off for both days.

People went NUTS at the grocery store.  One lady decided she needed to buy 600.00 of groceries to weather the storm.  It is going to be in the teens on Wednesday, how much can she eat.  I tried to use 2 different ATMs yesterday and they were out of cash.  Really?
  • I took a last minute trip to the Orange Bowl and got back yesterday.   I need a few things. Like normal weekly shopping things, not I'm going to be housebound for a year shopping.   The produce section of 2 different stores (and companies) were completely bare.  Meat dept? Nothing.  Bread?   yeah right.   Milk, eggs?  Nothing.  Well take that back, I did get my chocolate milk.    Even all the soup was gone.   I've never seen anything like it.

It's almost like people eat out all the time and decided they needed actual food at home.  I only wanted stuff for salad for the week, chocolate milk, which I drink every morning and some bacon.  I only walked out with the milk and that was the last bottle. My pantry/freezer is pretty well stocked in case of an emergency. It might be random stuff, but it's not like I would be going hungry.  Certainly didn't need to restock the place. These people cleared out the store like they were hibernating for the winter.

    Rude.

     :)
  • I wish our schools closed for cold weather.  Nothing closes here - schools, businesses, work, etc. (in the cities, rural is a bit different)  I am so envious of the elusive snow day.  Our board says that if they closed, some clueless parent still wouldn't hear of it and they would drop little Johnny off in an empty parking lot and drive off before he gets into the school, leaving little Johnny to freeze and die of hypothermia over the next 6-8 hours before parent returns. I've been to school in -40C, water main breaks and water pouring into a main hallway, no water in the building for 2 days, power outage, etc.  We're always open for business.

  • We are in the polar vortex here in Michigan.  Our state government is closed tomorrow, and the capital is in a state of emergency.  Oh, and the best part is I am off tooo!!!

  • The workplaces tossed! Cold day tomorrow!

Do you live in the US? Did you like Cuba? I am dying to go there.
  • It's 7 (-12 with wind chill) and we got a pissing of snow last night, like less than a half inch on top of a layer of ice. I'm livid. This cold is okay with me if there's snow, but it's not even VAGUELY worth it if there's nothing on the ground.

I'm in Canada, so much easier.  ;)  Havana was gorgeous, the weather was great and the beach and pool were both beautiful, but we won't be going back.  Food was terrible, which I was expecting, but the service sucked as well.  We were in a 5 star and didn't have anyone ask if we wanted a drink at the pool until day 6, as 1 example of many.  They were short on everything - glasses, towels, etc. all the time and everything just felt disorganized.

I can totally understand not having as much as resorts in Mexico, due to the US embargo, but service is something that they could easily excel at and they didn't.  Even things like having wait staff to offer juice/coffee with breakfast, which only happened about 3 morning out of the 7.  I'm glad we went, since I have been wanting to go for a long time, but we won't be going back.  We'll do AI's somewhere else.

  • Our office did NOT call a snow day for once, which shocks me. However, the various cities/regions nearby are under so many flash freeze/snow squall/blizzard warnings that our Manager decided that our team can WFH today. Yay!

  • I find it hilarious when schools close for cold days or a few inches of snow.  I get that you guys aren't used to it, but I still find it funny.  It's regularly -40 here in the winter and school is never canceled for that.  If it got down to -55-60, maybe.

Schools close if there's a lot of freezing rain, but that's about it.
  • We're used to -20C here in southern Ontario, but -40C isn't the norm for us. The Weather Network issued a warning for our area, and part of it had to reiterate that any exposed body parts may freeze in under 5 minutes.

On the upside, I had a WFH day again today, and my manager just texted me to let me know that all of the managers are having a call at 5:30am to determine if they'll call an inclement weather day again. Fingers crossed!

  • We're used to pretty darn cold weather up here, too, but I guess that -60 F forecast wind chill was a bit much for the authorities.
