Calligraphy Books/Pen Suggestions

I'm interested in learning calligraphy so I can address my own wedding invitation envelopes. My wedding isn't until September 2014, so I have some time to learn. Any suggestions for books and pens?

I've bought a few so far and wasn't too happy with either the guide (wasn't really for beginners) or the pens (i made a mess!). I've already figured out I don't care for the traditional pen with cartridges.

Thanks!

Re: Calligraphy Books/Pen Suggestions

  • They have calligraphy pens that are like permanent markers, but have the cut tip so they write more like a calligraphy pen (you can find them at like Joann's or Michaels. They also probably exist at an office store, too). They're a lot less messy than traditional cartridge pens, but it takes a little practice to figure out exactly how you have to hold the pen to get the proper line widths. Also, if you go this route, make sure to get several pens. I had a small issue with the pens starting to blunt a little at the tips, which made writing more difficult. This links to a website that seems to be pretty good for a beginner to learn the ins and outs of calligraphy. I ended up just trying to hold the pen in such a way that the angle of the tip gave my normal cursive handwriting a more elegant look. Good luck!
  • We used a marker called Elegant Writer.  It did not smear at all.

We traced the lines of a large index card with a black sharpie.  We inserted the card into our envelopes with the lines facing the front of the envelope.  Having lines to guide us made a huge difference, even when just using our traditional penmanship.
  • @jessiray - Thank you so much for the link! i looked up a few books, I don't know why I didn't think to google sites!

@mobkaz - I ordered an Elegant Writer and it's on it's way! Thank you! Also I think I've seen you suggest the lined index card in other posts related to addressing envelopes; it was the only thing I was certain on when beginning this task! :)
