Question about preowned dresses

Heyo!  So today was my first day trying on dresses, found a lovely Casablanca gown that I love, but it's pretty well out of my price range.  HOWEVER, on preownedweddingdresses, I found it for less than half my max budget, but it's a size 12.  I baaarely fit into the salon's sample size, which I hear are about a 10 on average, so I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get a dress that may be bigger and then work on getting it altered.  Has anyone else done this?  In particular I'd like to hear about any experiences with that site.  Thanks!

Re: Question about preowned dresses

  • you have to find out what size you are in bridal you take your normal size in street clothes and go up at least 2 sizes.  did you ask the salon what size samples you tried on? the 12 could fit you or still be 2 small.

your best bet is to go to the salon and retry on the dress ask them what size it is and have them measure you to see what size you would be for that designer and go from there if they say you are measuring at a 12 then get the preowned dress
  • This website has the size chart for Casablanca. I've heard that you shouldn't base your size on the sample size, because samples can get stretched out from being tried on and clipped and such. It's better to compare your measurements to the designer's size chart.

Be sure to check with the seller to find out if the dress has been altered. It's always better to err on the side of a little bigger than too small. While a dress can be taken in 1-2 sizes, they usually only have enough fabric built in to let it out by 1" or maybe 2".

I am also looking at preowned dresses. Preownedweddingdresses.com is a reputable site, but I've heard that the best deals are actually on ebay. I think a lot of the dresses on the wedding sites like preownedweddingdresses.com and tradesy.com are overpriced.

Yes to the bolded. I was recently stuck on what size BM dress to order for my girlfriend's wedding. One size was a little snug, but fit, and the next size up was too big. I was told I should definitely go with the bigger size because the samples had been tugged on and stretched from getting tried on so much.

  • always go with the size you are measuring at you could be perfect in the bust area and a little bigger in the hip and waist area but if its a corset often times they can tighten it to fit or take it in. i was measured 3 sizes larger than the sample i tried on. i ended up going with the size in between the sample and what i measured good thing i did otherwise my gown that came in would have been so big. as it is it needs to be taken  in the bust is to big so they have to fix that and shorten the dress
  • Thanks all!  I decided to go with the preowned dress.. the deal is stellar (assuming everything works out as it should and the item is as described)--almost $800 cheaper than at the boutique, and I'm obsessed with the dress LOL.  I found out the sample was a 10 (and it almost zipped, but not completely), and this dress is a 12, so it should work out well.  Thanks for the input!
