"Eat before you come to the party"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/wp/2014/01/06/michelle-obamas-50th-birthday-will-feature-dancing-but-not-dinner-2/

Etiquette expert's perplexed at the First Lady's birthday bash. Thoughts? I think the title was enough, no need for instructions.

Re: "Eat before you come to the party"

  • Ugh!!! though, it is just a party, so she doesn't necessary need to feed her guests a meal... unless you know, it's over meal time. Sounds like she'll have desserts, drinks and snacks though.

  • Why?! Seriously they could have left it with just the "Snacks, Sips, Dancing and Dessert" and it would have been totally fine. It would have told people in a less rude manner that there will be snacks and sweets but don't expect a full meal.

  • I saw that.   The time of the event makes the difference to me.  Although my experience in that area anytime is meal time.    Doesn't have to be a sit down but enough food for a meal would be excepted.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yeah, the instructions definitely seem heavy-handed. And it's pretty easy to get around this without being rude... hold your party late. People generally won't expect dinner at a 9pm party.

  • Did anyone read the comments on the article? People are bashing the (as they put it) "experts" who are apparently tea party members simply attacking MO because they don't like her - not because the invitation wording comes off a bit rude. Because it's about politics, not etiquette! *facepalm*
I stopped reading comments on anything related to politics for exactly that reason.

  • I usually refrain from reading comments too, but I'm at work doing a whole lot of nothing. Figured I'd at least get a chuckle out of someone's ignorance. heh

  • I guess the rules of polite society don't apply to the First Lady.

    smh
  • Well in her defense I doubt she was the one who said to put that on the invite. I doubt she even knows what the invite says let alone that the invite is rude.

If I need a good laugh I read the comments section of all articles.   There is always a hater, always lover, always someone who is very articulate so it appears they are making a good point but the information is not true and don't forget your average troll.

  • This is how I feel about the Obamas, period.

BTW there has been a TERRIBLE lack of Ryan GIFS on TK lately, ladies.
