Cake!

Going to meet with a possible cake baker tonight. Wanted to see what everyone else plans on doing for cake at their wedding?

I would like to do a small (2 to 3 tier) round cake. Simple design, buttercream icing, with pink flowers as accents, and maybe a touch of gold leaf accents here and there. I'm kind of obsessed with Marie Antoinette and I have this vision of a table full of decadent desserts of all types, sort of like a Viennese hour (which is funny, because Marie Antoinette was from Austria!). In addition to the cake, I would like to have a couple dozen cupcakes, macaroons, cake pops, and my favorite... mini chocolate eclairs. At our venue, there is a chalkboard sign above the cake table, and I plan on writing, "Let them eat cake!".

Re: Cake!

  • That sounds really cute. I worked with a cake baker to design my cake from some things I've been working on for a long time. I can't wait to get it and see how it turns out. I keep hearing about everyone having dessert tables and I keep considering it, but most of the time I'm the only person that eats dessert whenever we're with friends and family so I don't want it to be waste.

  • We're doing a small 3 tier cake to cut down on cost and then sheet cakes. Keeping it pretty simple with buttercream frosting and maybe some simple piping design on each tier. I may incorporate a few strands of lavender as that is our main wedding flower but I haven't decided. I'm also debating coloring the buttercream - either lavender or mint. FI isn't too keen on that idea but has given me free rein to figure things out. Flavors are a big one for me. He likes plain simple vanilla and chocolate. But I want to have something slightly more fun! The baker has over 100 different options so its hard to choose! probably do a sheet cake in vanilla and one in chocolate and then do each tier a different flavor as well. What flavors is everyone else doing?
  • @akopitzke my fiance is the exact same when it comes to flavors. He's afraid that if we do wacky flavors, no one will like the cake! I've heard of a "sour cream" cake before, and it's on the list of flavors our baker offers. Has anyone else tried that?

  • Sour cream ckae and cookies are very yummy! They aren't "sour" like you'd think, they are very moist. We're going with a 3 tier square with cream cheese frosting and fondont finish. The flavors are carrot, red velvet and marble.
  • I just have to add this...

CAKE!Everybody loves cake, aint never heard no one say hell naw I dont like no cake....

  • @dluberts Cake's gotta be the most delicious thing on the whole damn planet, LOL

  • I love cake, but FI can take it or leave it. I didn't see the point in doing a cake for less than 40 people if we we're gung-ho about it, so I decided instead to do a croquembouche (French cream puffs stacked in a conical tower and drizzled with caramel that hardens -- it means "crunch in mouth").

The funny thing is, after I decided that and told my mum she laughed and said that she and my dad had a croquembouche at their wedding, too! Funny coincidence for sure :)

  • @klburke88 can I come?! Your wedding sounds like heaven lol.

We're getting our cake from Publix (a Florida grocery store that has THE BEST cakes). They have one called Raspberry Elegance & it's the best cake I've ever had, so we're going with that. Vanilla cake, raspberry filling, and cream cheese icing. Design-wise, I want something like this:

  • @sarahsmiles326 I love the look of that cake, especially the icing and how it's a little "rough", like it has a texture instead of being just smooth. I am hoping for the same sort of look for our cake. So excited for our tasting tonight!

We are most likely going with a spice cake; at our tasting it was the only flavor that FI and I both really liked and was completely surprised by. The cake is provided by our venue and this is one of the designs that they were showcasing at the tasting that again both FI and I fell in love with.

  • @klburke88 I am so glad someone else got that! I am so juvenile....lol
  • @dluberts, the moment I read that, I heard it in Donkey's voice in my head lol.

@klburke88 I too am a big Marie Antoinette fan, bot the actual person (cause she is crazy and probably the most immature person ever to be born and put into royalty. I find her fascinating.) and the movie.  I want to go to your wedding just for your desserts! lol.

I will be doing cupcakes.  We decided on 4 flavors, vanilla (I was surprised at how much I loved their plain vanilla), chocolate (FI loved their chocolate), carrot cake (this was FI pick, I can't stand carrot cake) and strawberry shortcake.  We get a complimentary giant cupcake for the top and that will be strawberry shortcake flavored.  :)

  • We will be doing a three-tiered round cake. We are having 3 flavors, classic white, chocolate with chocolate mousse filling, and raspberry lemonade with raspberry filling.

Our design will be white frosting with polka dots in our colors: fuschia, yellow, and light orange. I love polka dots... And to avoid an entire polka dot wedding (yikes!) FI said we should decorate our cake with dots :)
  • We're doing a 4 tier cake with apple &cinnamon cake, Tiramisu cake and black forest cake.

    Balls to the wall cake.

  • Booked our cake last night! We decided on strawberry with strawberry filling for the main wedding cake. We're also doing 2 different cupcakes, chocolate with chocolate ganache and sour cream cake with blueberry filling. THEN, she is making us a couple dozen mini chocolate eclairs and almond macaroons. I'm so friggin excited! Here's a picture of what our cake will hopefully look like, except just two tiers instead of 4. The flowers are made of sugar!

  • LOVE that cake klburke88
  • We are going to meet with the chef at our reception site later this month to taste some different flavor options for our cake, but I'm going through the descriptions right now and think I found THE one without even tasting it!  How delicious does this sound??

    Baileys White Chocolate Torte:
Three layers of yellow chiffon drizzled with Baileys and simple syrup, two layers of Baileys and white chocolate bavarian covered with butter cream.

We are doing this entire set up except for the cake pops and the 1 tier small cake on the far left.  Ribbons will be switched out for Tiffany Blue and Tiffany Blue accents on the cupcakes.  Also the tiers like look like petals (or something?) are going to be ruffled instead.  Large cake, wedding white with rasp filling, smaller cake lemon with buttercream filling, cupcakes red velvet.

love love love the main cake, but i would put the cake to the right on top so its tall! but i wouldnt change anything <img class= ehh maybe the 2nd to bottom design on main cake." />
  • brittleigh13 Beautiful!  You'll have to post pics after!

I just schedule our cake tasting for 1/25 and I cannot wait! FI is not a sweets person at all but this is the moment I have been waiting for. We are also having a Viennese hour which will have 4 other kinds of cake (one of them is something crazy - chocolate ganache covered in almonds with cannoli cream or some amazingness), Italian pastries, French pastries, Greek pastries, fruit tarts, mousses, make your own sundaes, made to order crepes, bananas foster, chocolate fountain, and flaming coffee. I know this is crazy but Viennese hour was not negotiable for me!

Sooo, FI (the I-can-take-or-leave-cake person) has now decided that he wants a small cake, in addition to the croquembouche.

I've become obsessed with naked cakes lately, so I think that's what we'll go with! Not sure of the exact flavours yet, but it'll be fun deciding :)

Pics of naked cakes below, and some croquembouche!

  • @pumpkinsandturkeys - love the croquembouche! So unique!
