Lost 30 lbs and worried the dress won't fit

Hi all! I am getting married in May 2014, and I bought my dress in June 2013 (about 6 months ago). I haven't seen it since. When I ordered it, I was a snug size 14 and since then, I have lost 30 lbs and I would like to lose 10 more pounds. I am so thrilled, but terribly nervous that the dress won't fit! I have my first fitting in the beginning of february and I feel like my body has changed so much that I either a) won't like my dress anymore, or b) the seamstress won't be able to make it fit like it should. I am about a size 10-12 now. What do you think? Also the dress DOESN'T have a corset back (zip up with covered buttons), but it does have lots of boning and structure.

In addition, does anyone know if bridal stores will let you exchange a dress or if they will buy it back? Help!

Re: Lost 30 lbs and worried the dress won't fit

  • First of all, congrats on the weight loss!

They should absolutely be able to alter your dress. Most can be altered at least 2 bridal sizes without major changes to the structure being needed (ie: a 14 to a 10). Mine is also a zippered back with covered buttons, and my consultant told me that if needed, it could be changed to a corset to tighten things even more later on (but I'd rather not).

I will also note that I once had a bridesmaid dress ordered that was supposedly ordered according to my measurements, and it was literally 4 sizes too big when it came in. The seamstress needed to take apart the whole bodice and re-cut it, but was able to alter it down.

  • I am about your size. I had to buy a bigger sized dress (14) because my girls were way to big for a 12. So the waist had to be taken in quite a bit, it needed hemmed, my dress has a lot of boning and structure up top so the breast part also needed extra support. I had to get bra cups, i don't know what you call it but the breast seam?? part had to be taken in to make it lay tight and flat against my chest. It cost 294 dollars. I imagine thet will be able to adjust it to your size, I would be prepared to pay more though
  • Interesting! That's good to know that seamstresses can do all of that! Just wondering - how does the bra thing work? I would love an underwire, or something with a lot of support to be put in my dress. Are you supposed to buy a bra for them to sew in?
  • Congrats on all your hard work and losing all that weight!

I don't know about buying a bra for them to sew in, but I'll be getting something like this http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Jezebel-Caress-Seamless-Bustier-32533_Accessories-Lingerie-All-Lingerie

if not that exact thing.  I am big on top (DD) and just a strapless bra won't cut it for me.  I was wearing something like that when I tried on dresses and I liked how it felt, it was really supportive.  Plus, bonus, it sucked me in a bit and gave me more shape.  Also it smoothed things out a bit for me which will give the dress nice lines.

But as to your original question, they should be able to bring it in just fine.  Its a lot easier to take a dress in then to let it out. :)

  • It wad actually bra cups I had put in. I'm very large on top and usually wear a bra with an underwire. But with the way my dress is structurally up top the bra cups were enough to support me. I did have to pay an extra 20 for the bra cups but it was worth it. Why buy a bra/slip combo thing for 50 bucks when you might not wear it again. I felt less stuffed in my dress this way too, I originally had a slip/bra on and I felt stiff.
  • That's awesome advice! I agree, sounds totally worth it! I would like to avoid having to wear anything under my dress!
  • yea when I tried on my dress the first time the consultant didn't give me one of those bustier things, but when I went to a different store she gave me one....I didn't like it as much as it made me feel more stuffed into it and with the way my dress is cut I don't really need it but I do plan on getting the bar cups added in just to give me a lil more support and make sure the girls look good lol!

Wow! I didn't realize alterations could cost so much!! I guess I better be prepared for that!!
  • Yeah, be prepared I was floored.
  • I measured as a size 6 (extra short)  when i ordered my dress.  Or i thought i ordered my dress. The salon called the next day, apologizing profusely, because the dress was discontinued.  They offered me their sample, which they would get professionally cleaned and alter for free, to fix their mistake.  It is a size 12 (regular length).

I met with the seamstress there to make sure she could fix it all.  She is a very good seamstress - she used to make couture gowns for Vera Wang before "retiring" and coming to work for this bridal salon part time.  She said she can make a 12 into a 2 if she has to.  I'm not concerned.  She'll basically have to take it apart and cut and rebuild it, but i trust her.

The right seamstress will not have a problem altering your gown.  If the seamstress at the salon where you purchased it can't fix it, take it somewhere else.  It might cost a little extra, but it will be worth it for the dress to fit you perfectly on your wedding day.

  • Find a good seamstress! I had the same issue with a bridesmaid dress for my brother's wedding a couple of years ago: I lost 60 pounds and dropped from a size 14 at initial ordering to a size 2 (street sizes) before the wedding. I found a skilled seamstress who also custom makes bridal gowns, and she made it look like it was made for me. Bridal gowns are harder, and how well it can be altered depends on the cut and embellishments. A great seamstress could essentially re-make the dress if necessary, but you may want to start interviewing now to make sure you can find someone who can handle it. Your typical David's Bridal seamstress may not be able to do it, but someone can.
