engagement party timing??

Help! We got engaged 12/31/13 with a wedding date 9/6/14 - is there enough time in between for an engagement party? We bought a house 9/20/13 and I was thinking of doing a casual housewarming/engagement party around March (6 months before wedding/6 months after house/3 months after engagement). Is that appropriate?? I don't want people to think we are greedy with parties!

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: engagement party timing??

  • Congrats on your engagement!

You can't throw an engagement party for yourself.  It's considered in poor taste to throw a party in your own honor.  Engagement parties are gifts offered by other people.  If no one offers, you don't get one.  Most people don't have an engagement party--you won't be missing out on anything.

However, you can still host a fun and casual get-together.  Just don't make it about your engagement.

Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
  • In this situation it would probably be better to have a housewarming/ meet the family gathering.

All of this. I believe, if someone offer to host an engagement party for you, it should take place within 3-4 months.

Engagement parties are typically thrown by someone, not the couple, within 60 days of  getting engaged. What you are asking about would not be appropriate to have, sorry.

  • Thank you everyone! I am so glad I asked!!! Maybe just the housewarming will be done!
  • I think a housewarming instead is a great idea.

FI proposed after I'd already had a big birthday party planned at our house for him. So, while it was his 40th birthday, it was also the first time a lot of people had seen us since we got engaged. It was a really casual party and it was so much fun. A lot of family members got to meet as well.

I agree with this. I wouldn't label it an engagement party at all as you can't throw yourself an engagement party.
