Gym Memberships

Any 24 Hour Fitness members here? H and I really need to start getting in regular workouts and even though we have some equipment at home, I find we're more dilligent about it if we have to actually leave the house pay for it. I had a gym I loved, but they moved locations and it's just not feasable anymore. 24 seems to have reasonable prices, offers classes and it's nice we could use any sport club across the country when we travel for work or vacation.

Any members that can tell me if they like it or not? Anyone have a gym they'd recommend that might be in the Denver area as well? Do you all work out at a gym or at home?

Re: Gym Memberships

  • I used to have a 24 hours fitness membership (now I go to the gym at my university). They had everything I needed and I was happy with it. My favorite thing about it was that the pool was never crowded so I never had to worry about finding an open lane. When I graduate I will probably go back to 24 hours fitness and being able to go to any of their gyms across the country is really nice.

For a short time I had a membership at Bally. I don't recommend it. It might have just been the one I went to but it was very small and I felt like the people who worked there were very pushy and always trying to get me to buy more.

BF had a membership at Planet Fitness for awhile. He was happy with there but said 24 Hour Fitness was better.

  • Is 24 hours fitness the same as Anytime Fitness?  H and I used to do Anytime Fitness before we joined CrossFit and we both enjoyed that a lot. I recommend it if you're looking for something that's afforable.

We prefer to work out in a gym rather than at home. I will do home workouts on days that I can't make it to the gym just because they are usually less than an hour but it takes a lot more effort out of me to do that then just hop in the car and go to the gym.

I joined another 24/7 gym called Snap Fitness. It's a better deal if you do a couples deal than just as a single ($50/mo), but BF didn't go and wants some place on the way home from work. I'm paying $39.99/ mo. It's not the greatest deal considering its small and they don't have tons to offer other than the typical machines and the basics. But I am easing into going to the gym, always felt self-conscious. I go during off peak hours so I don't have to wait for stuff. And this gym is the closest and I need to eliminate all possible excuses for going. I like that I don't have to even worry about what hours they're open.
  • @BethSmiles - Thanks for the info. It's nice to hear that someone had a good experience there. I was afraid that classes might get overly full or that the guys would be too crowded to really use the equipment you want since their memberships are so low.

@Southernpeach89 - Anytime and 24 are different chains. I looked up Anytime and they are cheaper than 24...but do they offer classes or just equipment? I really like the idea of classes for me even though H probably only cares about the equipment.

  • I have a 24 hour fitness membership. I got a membership from Costco it was like 2 years for $350. My gym isn't the nicest. But it gets the job done.
  • I also have 24 hour fitness. For Xmas my parents bought me the two year membership for $370. Its way cheaper than any memberships 24 offers in house, so if you can buy it from Costco I'd do so.

  • @huynhette & @sbehbaha - That's awesome to know about Costco. H and I have a membership there, so I'll look into that!
  • @allusive007- I know some Anytime Fitness gyms offer classes, it just depends on which one. My H went to one that offered classes but the one I was at when we weren't living together didn't so I guess it just depends.

This is what we've had for the last 4 years.  The first time we bought the membership, it was 2 years for $299, then we bought it again it had gone up to $319.  Our memberships just ran out and we aren't buying it again because we've sort of migrated to different workouts (H has taken up road biking and I prefer home workouts), but I did really like it while we had it.  Our gym was really well maintained, never too crowded, had a great group class schedule, etc.  It was definitely worth it if you used it.
  • Y'all are making me feel ridiculous for my $65/mo gym membership. Especially since I could be using my university's gym for free. (Several reasons why I don't, but still.)

  • @phira I used to go to an expensive gym and I LOVED it there.  It is further away (20+ minutes) so I never was able to make it because I felt guilty leaving my pups after working 8-9+ hours a day then going to the gym for and being away another 2+ hour.  If you go to your gym and you love it, that's really all that matters!

  • @phira - don't feel that way! I used to pay $89/mo for my previous gym. It was a nice place, I had a great group of gals there and wonderful trainers. I felt like I was getting my money's worth. This year H and I are really trying to get ALL our debt paid off...so that's why we're scoping out more reasonable places.
  • I used to belong to a 24 hour fitness, loved it cause there were gyms every where in my area so no matter what I could work out.  I had a decent all club access so I could use most of the gyms except the really high class 24 hour.  They had great classes and machines and I usually went to the gyms in nicer neighborhoods since they had better machines, equipment and classes.  Its not to shabby and I do second buying it from costco if you can commit yourself to paying up front.  Else haggle with the sales guy.  I told my sales guy I wanted to pay $24.99 since I knew they had a friends and family deal they sometimes roll out.  He said he couldn't and I said call me when you do.  A few days later he did and I paid that price until I cancelled my membership.  Danish Man has it good, he pays only $10 at 24 hour fitness, like he got grand fathered into the old payment system and they honored it.  I don't go to the gym much anymore since I picked up water sports and work out on the water, bike, yoga and occasionally run.  But being pregnant has put a stop to most of those activities now.  So.... my belly gets rounder and my ass gets bigger.
