Wedding Cake Tastings?

Hi Everyone! Hope everyone's wedding planning is going well :)

Hoping someone can help... I am not sure I want to use my reception halls cake. It wasn't that great when I tasted it for a vendor fair so I'm thinking of going with a local baker. In order to avoid paying an additional cost on a cake that I won't like, I want to do tastings. I know my reception hall doesn't do tastings until you book and put a deposit down. Are bakeries like this as well? Can I taste before I purchase?

TIA!

Re: Wedding Cake Tastings?

  • Many bakeries will offer free tastings (or tastings for a nominal fee) before you book with them. We did four tastings and picked our favorite.

However, have you checked with your venue/contract to make sure you're allowed to bring in an outside baker?

  • Good to know. Thanks!

We can bring in an outside baker (which is good!)
  •  Yes, as mentioned above, lots of places will allow you to do tastings before booking with them. The company we chose, did not offer tastings prior to booking. What you can do though, is research reviews from previous customers, or see if they will offer a sample tasting for a small fee.

Also, double check in your contract if the venue you're booked with has a cake cutting fee. A few places we looked at prior to booking our venue, allowed you to bring in your own cake, but charged a 'cake-cutting fee' for bringing it in. Just something to double check! (Although, likely worth it if you dislike the cake they offer).

  • Many will do free tastings, some higher in demand bakeries might charge a small fee that goes towards your deposit if you book with them.
