Digital camera suggestions

Hi!

For our honeymoon in June, we will be going to Sandals Emerald Bay.  I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for a good digital camera.  We're looking for one that is just a regular point a shoot camera but is waterproof.  I have been pouring over reviews but nothing sticks out to me.  I also went to Best Buy to talk to someone and they were not helpful.  So I was just wondering what everyone else used/is using for their honeymoon camera.  Any recommendations would be great! If you have a good or bad experience with a certain kind please share :-)

Thanks,
Alyse

Re: Digital camera suggestions

  • I don't have any specific recommendations, but I've been very happy with an old Canon point-and-shoot (it's not waterproof, which is why I'm not recommending it to you, but brand-wise, it's been great).  This is one of the sites I've used in the past when buying DSLRs: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/2013-waterproof-roundup

PC Mag is also a great resource: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2366987,00.asp

In fact, since both rank the Canon Powershot D20 as the top in 2013, I'd probably end up going with that one (since I like Canons, and it would fit my point and shoot needs).
  • The only thing I can say is DO NOT buy an Olympus Stylus Tough. Worst camera ever! We have two.

The first one leaked on our second trip in 2010 (first trip it was fine). I thought it was possibly the design flaw in it(battery compartment tab to open thing didn't lock)/our fault for not being more careful nowing about the flaw.

So, I bought another one(the first one was out of warranty and to have it fixed cost more than to just buy a new one). Again, same dang thing. First trip fine, second trip leaked. This time it was under warranty so I had it fixed.

Ok, so for 2012's two trips it worked (although, for trip two it wasn't used), used it in 2013 in Cancun no leakage but now my pictures aren't clear, becoming pixilated, the zoom barely works(fuzzes the pic) and the stabilizer to reduce shaking no longer works. Do to all that, I was in able to video my dh climbing up Coba. Needless to say, I'm a bit miffed. For the rest of the trip I used my iphone(land only).

For this year I bought a dicapac for my iPhone and will be using that (it's my old iPhone 4S so I'm not worried if it gets ruined).

OH that stinks....I have this one and I was going to recommend it! We've taken it in the ocean in Cancun and lots of different lakes and stuff and it's fine. Make sure you clean the salt off after the ocean. Sorry you got duds!

I cleaned it exactly as the instructions stated( that was one of my thoughts with the first one). To be honest, my iphone takes much better quality pics so, I'm kinda glad the camera broke...again. I tried my dicapac for my iphone in the ocean in OC Md and it seemed to work fine. We will find out this year when we go to Jamaica.

  • If you can't find a water proof camera the only two other options that I thought of is a disposable camera with the plastic water proof cover or a go pro. My fiance and I have one and we love it it takes videos and pictures. The case you can get to go with is water proof up to 130 feet I believe. You can get all kinds of accessories to go with it chest straps wrist straps extra batteries charges there is everything. We have a whole case of different things we are bringing on our honeymoon. It is small to fits right in your pocket. Depending on what you are using it for bring extra batteries! We have an led screen on ours (your able to see what picture or videos you are taking with out you dont know till you get it uploaded)and  the battery dies faster but I think without it should last a little longer. Amazon has some good deals for the go pro.
