Wedding Woes

Seriously, could this day get any worse?

Woke up this morning having to call out of work because I've been battling a horrible stomach bug that started off as a sinus headache which led to a cold and has now gone through out my body and is attacking my poor poor stomach.  On top of being sick, I got an email from our venue catering manager, stating that we have a past due balance still due and that if it's not paid by this Wednesday, the accounting department can up and cancel our wedding reception.  This is causing me to freak the heck out.  I just called and left a message for the catering manager AND I replied to her email.  I'm in such a freaked out state that I'm crying my eyes out, and since I'm not feeling the greatest, it is just adding to my crap day.  To have someone say that "Accounting can send a cancelation email if payment isn't received" really upsets me.  We've dished out so much money already...can't they see that?

I am fully aware that we have that small (if you consider $795 small) past due balance, and we have been putting the money together since our most recent payment before Christmas ($2,000).  We've resorted to taking a small loan against FI's 401k account, which will hopefully hit our wedding fund soon (they said 7-10 business days so, 2 weeks) so we can pay the entire remaining balance of our wedding, in full ($3,590.86). Hell, the first payment to pay back the loan starts this Friday, so we should have the money well before then, I would hope.  That way we don't have to worry about our reception being canceled.  I'm just praying that she calls me back so I can talk to her.  I don't want to lose out on all that money that we just spent (7k) because of one stupid payment that could wait an extra couple of weeks!!! Geeeeeze!!!!

Could this day get any worse?

  • That's a lot of business you're putting out there.

And yes, your day could get a lot worse and asking the question just invites more BS to happen...so good luck with that.

Ewwww  no.  Don't do that.  My stomach can't handle it.
Here's hoping and praying will do it's trick and the catering manager will have a heart (which I know she does as she has been awesome thus far!).

I am sorry, I can't get over the fact that you pulled money out of your fi's 401k.

Were you not aware of how much your venue costs or when payments are due? Also, will your venue wait 7-10 days for payment?

I had a serious discussion with FI about him pulling the money out of the 401k.  It's our only option right now.  Our account information was stolen just after Christmas and we had to open a new one.  We're still dealing with the bank on the purchases that were made (in Ohio and California) that are stuck in limbo.  We've gotten a good majority of that money back, but a good portion of it is still "stuck."  The money that was in the account was to go to the past due balance AND the remaining balance.  We were about 1k short before our account info was stolen.  Figures, when it rains it poors.  Thankfully the venue is understanding and has given us time.

If we get all the stolen money back (including overdraft fees, etc) we will be able to roll it over to the 401k with out a problem.

My issue is that there are huge tax penalties for withdrawing money from your 401k before you are eligible. A simple loan from a bank would have been far less costly. I assume your bank knows what happened with your account giving hacked, so they might have been willing to lend you money if you previously had good standing.

I told FI to try the bank loan vs. taking the 401k out...but he was very demanding with wanting to do the 401k.  I am thinking that he thinks that he won't get penalized if it's replaced come tax time in 2015...I don't know.  I wasn't going to get into a huge argument over it.

withdrawing from a 401k is different than taking a loan against a 401k. it may not be the best solution, but there aren't penalties because you're not withdrawing anything. the money remains in the 401k. and you can repay that money.

it shouldn't be used willy nilly, but i think if you're going to criticize someone for using 401k money in any way, at least understand the difference.

  • This is basically why you should not be planning a wedding that you can not afford.

I am sorry to hear about the bank account theft you've encountered - however you & your fiance should have more than 1 bank account & have an emergency 6 month + in savings to prevent from dipping into the 401K accounts. There is absolutely no logical reason to go into debt for a wedding.

Maybe I should have worded my OP better. We did have all the money set aside and have separate accounts for our own personal paychecks etc. The account that we set up for the wedding was stolen and used. We were extremely careful with every thing that we did with this account. we didnt buy anything online. Everything was done in person. We did not think to have another account set up just in case the wedding account had issues. We were transferring money from our accounts into the wedding fund. He did the 401k loan and he will not be penalized for taking a loan out. If all of the money is returned after we get the loan, it will be transferred to the 401k account to pay it off.

This wedding has been planned as something we can afford. Having this money stolen from us when it was to go to pay off our wedding, sucks and there is no way we can put that type of money out of our paychecks in 4 weeks. No way. This was the only solution. We are very proud of the fact that we are paying for this ourselves. With our hard earned money. You saying we shouldn't be planning a wedding we can't afford is rude and uncalled for. If I was 20 something and complaining about it, then yes. But I'm not. I'm 33 and know how to budget with the best of them. What happens if YOUR account that you have 6+ months worth of money in gets stolen...then what? You're up shits creek with out a paddle. We were up there with obly one paddle. We fixed it the best way we know how. Once our money is returned the loan will be paid in full. We won't be going into debt. Thank you very much.

  • How are you out all that money?

If it happened electronically (as opposed to raiding to cash money cookie jar or possibly cleaning out accounts with stolen checks) you shouldn't technically liable for more than $50 by law. I believe this held true for both debit and credit accounts.

I mean you will have to fight with the bank, hard, and you are arguing to get the money back (which means you need to stall like mad for paying anything)...haven't you tried that?

maybe they have a bank that doesn't offer liability, and it may be a PITA to get that money back ?
  • The liability is federal law. The MOST that a bank can hold liable is $50.

There are banks that don't offer liability? Damn.

  • A friend of mine's BOA card was hacked a couple of years ago.  It took her several weeks to get all of her money back.  Left BOA as soon as she got it.  They were awful.

From what our bank has told us, there must have been a card made because the purchases made were in the store (a few were online and they have been refunded already) and "swiped."  There were purchases made in stores that I have never been to before, ever.  We are held liable for $50.00 as is true with all of our bank accounts that we have.  However, the money that is in limbo, they have to compare signatures and they're waiting for the electronic copies of the receipts.  I don't know as we just started dealing with this a little over a week ago.  Hopefully everything will be settled and reimbursed soon.

BOA is being a PITA to us.  We have had to provide proof and it takes them forever.  I hate this bank and have told FI from day one that I hated that bank.  I would have been happier having my money at Wells Fargo or Chase...but no, he has been banking with BOA for almost 15 years and said he's never had issues before.  But he has said once this is settled, we are closing our account there and opening elsewhere.

It's BOA...they're giving us the run around, etc.  I looked at the bank statements online and I don't see how they can't realize that our purchasing activity has been in LARGE increments (Deposits to venue, large payment to our limo company, etc).  These purchases are in the smaller increments (less than 300.00 a piece) with the exception of two rather large purchases at Best Buy and Sears (totaling 3500).  This is where a majority of our issue is.

From what our bank has told us, there must have been a card made because the purchases made were in the store (a few were online and they have been refunded already) and "swiped."

The same thing happened to my husband's card -- they made a fake one and it was swiped. Visa called us because we had made purchases in Nashville, where we live, and then an hour later there were purchases from the same card at a nail parlor and hair supply in Chicago. They canceled our card immediately and said to call the bank the next day to get our money back, and the next day the bank gave us a form to fill out, and when we turned it in, we had our money back in two business days.

Bank of America has always been shitty. My husband banks with them for his personal funds, but I love our credit union that we use for our joint account and the small, local bank (two branches) that I use for my personal banking. Seriously, with all of the shittiness that BoA pulled that led (among other things) to occupy, people need to stop banking with them.

I thought it would be that easy.  The smaller online purchases and smaller in store purchases at CVS, another local pharmacy in Ohio (?!!?), and a gas station were all refunded as they were all under 300 a piece.  The bigger ones, are the ones that the bank has issues with because from what they said, there may have been large merchandise purchased and they'll have to track it down (possibly because of delivery - who knows).  We are going to close this account as soon as we get our money back.  I'm beyond pissed and so is FI.  I had an issue with my own personal bank (wells fargo) and half of the money stolen was replaced the same day (I called early on) and the rest was replaced the next business afternoon or something.  I love my bank and hope to god my FI agrees and moves his accounts there.

  • I use Wells Fargo for our renovation credit line and my car loan, and they've never been an issue for me. We seriously love our credit union though, so I'd look into that if it's an option. The credit union was the only place that husband and I agreed to -- I wanted us to have a joint at my bank and he wanted us to bank at BoA, and I was like fuck that no BoA, so we did credit union. We just had to donate $15 to an autism research foundation and were able to buy membership into the union.

There is one credit union near us that we can possibly apply to become members, but A) we have to work for the state and/or  B) we have to have a job in the city where the bank is.  Sadly, we both work outside of the city where the bank is and we don't work for the state.  So that sucks.  I'm sure we can find a credit union somewhere else if need be.  Thanks for the advice/input! Dually noted and will be passed along. :o)

  • Ahhh, I see. It's BOA that needs the V8 smack. Or else a lesson from CC companies on electronic surveillance of unusual activity and how it might actually benefit them.

I'd be floored that they let activity like that slide for so long. Yeah, once you get your $$$ back, transfer every penny somewhere else. Good luck!
