Maui vs Kauai vs Oahu

We are getting married in September. Planning on going to Hawaii for at least 10 days. Figured we should pick 2 islands. Can't decide between Maui, Kauai, and Oahu. Thinking we will def go to Maui. Any thoughts?

Re: Maui vs Kauai vs Oahu

  • They are all very different from each other. What types of things do you want to do? Also, a lot of people only choose to spend 2-3 nights in Oahu, so you could potentially fit in all three islands (2 nights Oahu, 4 nights Kauai, 4 nights Maui). Again, it really depends on what type of experience you are looking for. FWIW, Kauai is my favorite island (lush, north side is quiet) and Oahu is my least favorite (too developed/busy, but it does have some unique sights.)

  • You can do multiple islands fairly easily (Hawaiian Air flies between them for not much money, and it's a great airline). I personally loved Kauai. Oahu, I could take it or leave it (the North Shore is beautiful, though). Kauai has a wonderful, undiscovered charm. The Na Pali Coast is a once-in-a-lifetime sight.
  • Ditto PP.  Only go to Oahu if there's something specific you want to see, like Pearl Harbor.  Even then, I'd stay 2-3 nights max and save the bulk of your vacation for another island.

  • Pretend I said what Jells said.  We did Kauai and Oahu on our honeymoon.  I'd been to Hawaii before and really didn't want to do Oahu again.  But H had never been and is a big history buff, so I knew he'd want to do Pearl Harbor.  He has now said that there is no need for us to do Oahu again!  I had also been to Maui and loved it there.  Maui is a great mix of Oahu and Kauai, I think.  It has the best of both worlds.

If you really want to do Pearl Harbor, you can do it all in the same day from whatever island you are staying on.  Some travel places offer a tour to take you and bring you back ($300+ pp), but I think you can do it cheaper if you just fly yourselves over for the day and rent a car.  It can also give you time to drive around the North Shore, which is a great drive, prior to heading back to the airport.

  • We went to Kauai and had a nice time, but our one regret is that we should have island hopped and changed scenery a bit!  Kauai was very pretty, great weather in September; we loved the hikes and all the little different beaches.  Zip lining was awesome and our Luau was fun too (you will find those everywhere though!)  We stayed in the north shore which was great for the little beaches but had to drive30-45 minutes daily to go to where the bigger restaurants, resorts, night life, etc, so if we go again we would stay closer to lihue or poipu to avoid the daily drive (although it was a pretty drive, one of us couldn't drink so we could drive home).  Anyway, Kauai was great; we would have mixed it up with Oahu or the Big Island next time though.

    Anniversary
  • We did the Four Seasons at Wailea in Maui for 10 days on our honeymoon in late September and Early October of 2012. It was perfect!
  • I am going this March for mine! 5 nights on Oahu (in Kailua Beach) and 6 nights on Maui (Lahaina).  Enjoy wherever you choose!
