Surprise anniversary party??

What are your opinions? My parents' 30th wedding anniversary is at the end of June and I have been tossing around the idea of a surprise party. I was thinking about calling out of town family to see if they would like to come. That is probably a long shot though, since they are hundreds of miles away, but it would be the thought, right? And if they do come, even better!! I've never known anybody personally that has had one, so I didn't know what the general consensus was on them. One possible problem with out of towners is that my brother is getting married at the beginning of November, so I wouldn't want to take away the possibility of them not going to his wedding if they come to the surprise party. I know they could definitely afford it, I just don't know if they would be able to take the time away for both events. Opinions? Advice? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!!!

    I think it sounds like a great idea. I wouldn't worry too much about people not going to your brothers wedding (assuming they out of towners know about the wedding) they will be able to make that call and they have a few months in between if they decide to go to both.

    Personally, I think that surprise parties are a bad idea in general. There's always one auntie who can't seem to keep her mouth shut about it. Or your folks might be planning something of their own, and feeling it out without giving the game away can be a pain.

    That said, if your family would be into it, then go for it! It's all about knowing your audience...

    I actually went to a surprise anniversary party a few months ago. It was great. My cousin sent out invites and everything and it was really a beautiful affair!

    If you think your parents would enjoy this sort of thing, go for it!  We all planned one for Fi's parents' 30th anniversary last year, and they had a ball.  It was a couple months after the real anniversary and they thought it was for FSIL's graduation, so there were beyond shocked.  You could tell they had not one inkling what was going on.  Fi's brothers and sister watched FILs' wedding video and matched the color scheme from their wedding, so cute.  And they got a ton of friends and family to come, probably at least 60 people.  It wasn't fancy, just in a VFW hall with home-cooked food from Fi's aunt, but it was totally a blast and his parents were so excited and thankful.  They are extremely family-centric and we knew the only thing his mom wanted was to get everyone together, so this was perfect for them.  For their 25th they took all four kids on a cruise, so this was a nice way for the kids to do something for them.

    FI's family threw a surprise anniversary party for his parents many moons ago (before we were dating), and they look like they had a blast in all the pictures. They weren't big party people (FFIL still isn't), but the family as a whole is really tight-knit and enjoy getting together. This was a pretty casual party, and I think that may be why it worked so well. I think it's a know-your-parents kind of thing. If they'd enjoy it, then totally go for it!

    Thank you all so much for your input!! It is greatly appreciated! :) I think I am going to plan one. I can't wait! Now, I just have to think of a ploy to get them there. I'm not very good at lying, especially when I am excited lol. Thank you all again!
