XP: Glasses, Contacts, or other?

I wear glasses 90% of the time. I do have contacts but usually do not wear them since after a couple hours they start to irritate me. My glasses have transitional lenses so they darken when I am outside. I don't want to wear them on my wedding day because I don't want to look like I am wearing sunglasses while trying to take pictures.

Here are the options I could come up with:
    1. Get glasses that look like mine but without the transitional lenses
    2. Try to wear the contacts often enough and long enough so they don't irritate me the day of the wedding
    3. Take my current glasses off during pictures.

Any ideas?

  • I have chronic dry eye, so I can't wear contacts, but I'm going to wear them on my wedding day! I say just try and gear up for them. And have eye drops handy!

  • I wear glasses too but dont want to on my wedding day. Im going to the eye doctor and having an exam for contacts and getting like a box so i can wear them on my day. I want to be able to see the groom when i step in the room at the other end. Do it! Then switch I am
  • Personally, I'd get glasses with regular lenses. It was important to look like myself on my wedding day. But you should do what makes you comfortable.

  • I wear glasses 100% of the time. I do have contacts that I put in for special occasions but they get irritating quickly. I've been debating the same issue. I was finally getting okay with the idea of wearing my glasses at my wedding, but FI said he would rather I wear contacts. We have also talked about maybe getting laser eye surgery before the wedding to just solve the problem altogether. Although that would be one more expense we don't need right now. So I will probably wear contacts and just make sure I have a lot of eye drops with me. I may wear glasses until just before ceremony, but I'm worried about ruining makeup when putting contacts in, so not sure yet.

FYI, there are a lot of different brands of contacts that eye doctor can give you, so you may need to test several and find which one works best for you. I tried 4 different trial pairs last time I bought them before we settled on an ok one.

And, if you want different glasses, they don't necessarily have to match your current ones. They are an accessory, just like jewelry, so you could change it up a bit. I know people who have 5 or 6 pairs and can coordinate their glasses with their outfits. I have 2 regular pair, 1 pair sunglasses, and 1 pair of safety glasses. I bought mine on zennioptical.com and they have some good options for cheap. The only downside is you can't try on first, but I go to eye doctor and try on there so I know what shape looks best on me then just buy similar shape. So far that's worked great. I even bought some without trying on figuring it was only $40 and worst case scenario was that I'd have a backup pair if I needed them.

  • Thanks for the advice!
  • Your contacts really shouldn't hurt you.  Mine did for so long, until I went to a different eye doctor and learned that my eyes have a different "base curve" than the contacts my previous doctor had been prescribing.  He prescribed a different brand with the right curvature to fit my eyes, and now I can wear contacts without them digging into the sides of my eyes.

I also have dry eyes, and find that putting drops in my eyes before putting the contacts in is helpful.
