welcome bags at the hotel?

so I was just reading another post where someone made a suggestion for welcome bags at the hotel. we have a decent amount of out of town guests and this is something I hadn't thought of since I've never been an out of town guest at a wedding before, but I think it sounds like a great idea. what do you suggest putting in them? I'm terrible at this so all suggestions are welcome! thanks :-)

Re: welcome bags at the hotel?

  • I also had not heard of this until just a few years ago.  Upon arriving to an out of state hotel for a nephew's wedding, we found a welcome bag waiting for us.  It was incredibly simple.  It had cookies made in the shapes of the states of Wisconsin and Michigan, which represented the bride and groom.  It had some bottles of water which came from the "famous" Wisconsin waters of Chippewa Falls (groom's hometown).  It had a list of local restaurants that the bride and groom personally critiqued, and denoted their favorite entrees at each one.  I cannot tell you how much that simple gesture of hospitality meant in terms of thoughtfulness and welcoming.

If it is in your budget, I would recommend it.

My daughter and her FI put food items in their bags that represented each other.  Pita chips, trail mix, gum, Tootsie Pops, instant beverage mixes such as single packets of Crystal Lite, coffee, or hot cocoa, bottled water, and puppy chow were the food items.  For their peers and a few uncles known to overindulge, they made a "hangover helper" kit that included 7-Up, Tums, Pepto Bismol, pain reliever, and saltines.  They made a door knob hanger for the hotel door.  One side said something along the lines of, "Welcome to our Wedding"......along with a little note.  The flip side said, "Please do not Disturb.  We are recovering from Bride and Groom's Wedding.  They also included a little booklet that listed some local activities and restaurants, the wedding activities before, the day of, and after the wedding, and a note of thanks for attending the wedding.
  • I'm making some for our out of town guests. I'm including bottles of water, gum, something from the area (local honey) to take home, gum/monts, headache and stomachache medicine (the travel sized ones works wonders), maps and guides of stuff around town to entertain them, various chocolate covered nuts, something salty and muffins from a local brand in the area. I'm adding some other stuff probably to it too....we'll see.
  • Keep in mind how people travel. I believe that you are limited to only 1oz liquids on carry ons. So if you have a lot of people flying in maybe nix the liquid based favors (the honey made me consider this).

Especially with baggage charges, a lot of my friends travel carry-on only, or don't want to risk liquids packed in with their clothes.
  • My mom is doing welcome baskets for our OOT guest (only 6 hotel rooms though).  I didn't have the time to mess with it and it is something that she wanted to do since all but one of the OOT guests were guests at my sisters destination wedding and she did gift  bags there.

We are doing very simple bags with a small candle from Bath & Body works and some Cheryl'ls cookies and maybe a few other small things.  I told my mom how many rooms we had blocked off and am letting her run with it.

it's 3.4oz containers for liquid. if the bottle is 3.4ozs or less its fine.

In addition to this, use things that people can easily fit into either a carry-on or a checked piece of luggage.  Don't use large containers for your welcome bags, for example.  They're hard to carry in luggage of any size.
