Centerpieces - Too big?

I'm DIYing a lot of stuff for our wedding, including all of the "florals". We realized that with an outdoor July wedding in a garden, there wasn't much of a need for us to spend precious budget dollars on flowers that may or may not stand up to the possible heat and humidity we'll likely have (Anyone in NY/NJ remember how stiflingly hot the last two July 4ths have been? Yuck!). I found a cute idea from Martha Stewart to make flowers out of coffee filters and ran with it. For the centerpieces, I'm making the "flowers" and putting them in 15 oz cans that I'll decorate with white paper and ribbon. I mocked a few out and doing one can felt kind of... lonely. Then I thought maybe putting 3 per table so it would look more evened out, but I don't know if that's too much centerpiece for the table. The venue has 60" round tables. Each can of "flowers is about 9.5" across and when set up with 3 cans measures about 18" across. Does that seem like it would take up too much space? I've been to weddings with enormous centerpieces where you barely had room for your plate on the table. I don't want that, but I also don't want the whole lonely little centerpiece feel either. What do you ladies think? (For perspective, the table in the pictures is 42".)

  • Could you perhaps just use a bigger canister and put multiple flower arrangements in one canister? That would make it look bigger without cluttering the table.
  • Maybe you could put them in Eiffel tower vases.  That way, you can still have the big flowers, but they're elevated up and out of the way and leave a very minimal footprint on the table.

The taller vases won't work. The stems are relatively short (6") wooden floral sticks. They're really lightweight, too. Every time I've tried any of the taller or wider cans (28 oz tomoto cans), the arrangement pops right out since the sticks need to press on the inside of the cans to hold the flowers in place. Ugh, this is so frustrating. I've already made more than half the flowers we'd need before thinking about how much space the arrangements would take up (why I measured the bottom of the can but not the whole arrangement is beyond me, I blame Christmas!). I could possibly see if I can find floral sticks that are taller than 6" to use the taller cans I have.

  • I do kind of feel like the one is too lonely and the 3 is too much. And since you can't do a higher level, what about doing 2 of them with an accent of some sort like a pillar candle or picture frame table number?

This is a centerpiece that we use for events at work often. Try putting a piece of floral foam in the bottom of the canister and it will hold the arrangements in and prevent them from popping out.

We can't do candles, but the table number thing would probably work. We were originally going to have the table numbers sticking out of the arrangement, but it wouldn't be a big deal to do it differently.

I will try this too. I was trying to avoid putting much else in the cans because we'll need to put some marbles or rocks to weigh them down enough not to blow away or tip over, but that might not be an issue with bigger cans.

  • If those tables in the picture are 42"... Idk, I disagree that the three cans are too much. Adding a little height with the table number, and maybe some of that silver star garland stuff or confetti or something? I think you're on the right track though. I think of it like it's a three-tiered thing- table number sticking up top, then flowers in the middle, then ribbon or something around the base. GL!
  • Or I don't know how you feel about this- a friend of mine had hers on a tray with the flower vase in the middle and the rest of the tray was hershey's kisses. It took up some room around the bottom of the flowers for more interest and it was just yummy while waiting for food hahah. They have trays at the dollar store.

  • I love those! I do agree though, one is too lonely and three is a crowd. Could you maybe use one and put it on a stand or pedestal? Maybe add a few candle votives and such to even it out? I know you can find a lot of DIY ideas on Pinterest ofcourse, and just by googling images. :) Good luck to you!

On the 60" tables, it would leave 21" all around the centerpieces to the edges of the tables. I eat dinner on my coffee table every night, so I have no idea if 21" is enough space for people to have their plates, glasses, silverware, etc. It seems like a lot of room to me, but I really have no clue. We wanted to do the table numbers on the top to add a little height, but to keep the centerpieces themselves relatively low so people could still talk over them.

We thought about this. Originally, I was going to make homemade chocolates as our favors (I make awesome peanut butter cups and chocolate covered marshmallows), but we realized that chocolate was going to melt and make a big mess so nixed it. I thought about doing those little fake crystal jewels but we are trying very hard to avoid buying anything we can't reuse - and really, I'd never reuse fake crystal jewels again.

I'm avoiding Pinterest for fear I might fall under the spell of the burlap and lace covered mason jar craze! lol I'm toying with the idea of doubling up the cans for one so that it's higher than the others. I'm covering them over with paper so no one would see it anyway.

  • What about putting them on a mirror and some glass marbles around?
