Re: having difficulty picturing type of reception i want to have

  • It's not rude of you not to provide alcohol.  It's rude of guests to decide that they can't have a good time without it and criticize you for not having it.

Possibly people won't stay as long as they would if there was alcohol, but if they leave earlier than they would if alcohol were available, it reflects on them and not you.  So I wouldn't sweat it.
  • Line up good music, good food, and some fun nonalcoholic drinks (mocktails, Italian sodas, coffee bar, etc.).

  • Lately, I have seen quite a few posters on these boards who skip the booze.  That is your right and it is not RUDE at all.  People have lots of reasons to avoid the alcohol, from money, to religion, to family members in recovery,to  just not wanting drunk people at their wedding. Your reasons are nobody's business.  The only time it becomes an issue is when somebody uses an alcohol free party to push and agenda and it becomes a MADD/SADD or AA meeting.
Other than that, have fun and enjoy your guests.
  • Think about other events with your family and friends.  What is the normal vibe when there is not alcohol?  Use that for the tone or vibe that you want to set.

If your crowd is the type that won't dance all night without a few drinks, don't plan on the dance floor being packed all night.  Instead, it might be better to plan a brunch or an afternoon event and not expect it to go all night.

If your group will dance all night regardless, book a DJ and plan an evening event.
  • As others said - if you're crowd isn't a group that will hit the dance floor without some booze - try offering alternatives to the typical dancing all night. My sister and her wife had an outdoor wedding where they had lawn games like boccee and cornhole (bags for those not in Cincinnati area) - it was a great alternative to those who just didn't like dancing. We've discussed having some card and board games at tables for those who don't like dancing.

But I'm more of an outside of the box kinda bride - so that take as you will. :-)
  • I love brunch, so I always suggest brunch when people want to have a dry wedding or cut costs.  Waffles for everyone!

Once you narrow down the guest list and time of day, you should look at many different types of venues.  I had a hard time picturing until I actually started looking at places.  Many hotels and ballrooms I walked into, I just immediately had a "no" feeling.  Seeing a lot of different spaces really helped Fi and I envision what we actually liked.

  • I agree with JCBride, once you see "the" space, more inspiration might find you! I had absolutely NO clue what I wanted for our reception, but once we picked our venue the ideas kept coming. It's hard to visualize something if you don't know where it's taking place. Also, think of things that you can do that would be fun for your guests. Maybe a photo booth. One of my best friends didn't want dancing at her wedding - just a personal choice - so they did a casino themed reception (in the midwest) with table games and every guest got x amount of "play" dollars. The guests LOVED it. They had an ipod on with some music playing in the background, but no one complained about lack of dancing. And even though it was fake money people got super in to it!

  • I also had no idea what kind of reception I wanted. I knew the venue I wanted which we booked. then to come up with a 'theme' I started thinking of things that were important to us as a couple. we got engaged in Central Park on a horse and carriage ride so I decided to start with that and now I have the entire vision in my head from favors to table names to decorations to place cards. once you think of things that mean something to you as a couple, everything should just fall into place.. where did you meet? where did you get engaged? where was your first date? what do you do for a living? where is your favorite vacation spot? ask yourself these questions and you should get yourself a starting point!
  • Thanks everyone! I'm appreciative of your thoughts and suggestions. The reception is going to be following the ceremony and it's going to be in a community type of place there will be dancing and singing because my entire family is into kareoke. I have a feeling no matter what type of reception we have that our guests will have a blast.
