Pressure?

When I plan my redemption I feel pressure to surve alcohol. I am not comfortable doing so.

I also feel like I am being used as a want for a free bar/ getting trashed.

Re: Pressure?

  • Any one else feel this way?
  • I think autocorrect got you, it changed reception to redemption.  You don't HAVE to serve alcohol, although I can't say wether or not you having a dry wedding will upset your guests.  It seems like that varies from group to group, some groups of guests don't mind, others get annoyed that there isn't alcohol.

Just be aware that people won't stay at the reception as long as they would if you served alcohol. Also, it'll be easier to pull off a dry reception if it's during the day, rather than around dinnertime.  Not many people are going to expect to be drinking much in the middle of the day.

  • Thanks for the auto correct strikes again, heads up. Made me laugh.
As for my reception it is on a Sunday at 2pm. In my county it is illegal to serve adult beverages before noon.
  • Oh, I wouldn't even think people that there would be alcohol at a wedding starting at 2:00 p.m.

  • Uh yea auto correct made an appearance...Can I just ask why you don't feel comfortable doing so? I don't think you should feel used- after all your reception is a thank you to your guests for being there on your special day. Do you really think your family and friends are just there to use you and get wasted on your wedding day? That's not a very nice thing to think about them. With that being said if you truly feel uncomfortable for other reasons, then there is nothing wrong with having a dry reception. I agree with that PP said above.

  • Maybe the rude ones just stick out.
  • Seriously, 'reception' to 'redemption' is one of the best auto-correct fails EVER! Thanks for the (unintentional) laugh!

If you're getting pressure from people who think they won't have a good reception without booze, screw them. A dry reception, at that time of day, is more than acceptable. (A dry reception at any time is acceptable, obvs, but especially at 2 p.m. on a Sunday). If they don't like it, screw them.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Having a dry wedding is fine and acceptable, esp @ 2 pm. I'd love a nice cup of coffee with cake. You can do some fun ice tea, lemonade, or mocktails.

Don't let people pressure you, if you want a dry wedding, go for it.

Sunday at 2 pm is pretty perfect for a dry wedding.  I certainly wouldn't attend a wedding at 2pm on a sunday and expect to be drinking.

  • I agree. I would not expect alcohol at an afternoon reception. That's one of the reasons we had a lunch reception--to lessen that expectation. And I have no patience for people who can't attend a social function for a couple hours without alcohol. Surely they sometimes go to places or events where there isn't any.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Agree with PPs -- if you are going to do a dry wedding, that's the perfect time/day for it. If I was going to a reception then, I wouldn't expect alcohol because I'd view it as more of a brunch/lunch reception, and few people drink at those times.

  • Thanks for the laugh( auto correct. ) The advice and opinions have helped.
  • I laughed so hard reading that post. For a second I stopped reading and was like "Ummm...what the hell is this bride asking?!" Then I read the rest of your post OP and caught on to "redemption" really was suppose to be reception. Hahaha awesome auto correct hahaha =D

I agree. Do not let people pressure you into doing something you are not comfortable with. If you don't want alcohol at your wedding, for whatever reason, you do not have to. Also you do not have to explain your reasoning to anyone who questions it. Just simply state "That is what FI and I wish for our reception and that is what we have decided."

  • Yep, best auto correct ever.  Here I sit now, thinking to myself that when the time of my redemption comes, I will probably be wanting a lot of alcohol.
