eww!

So my wonderful, amazing dog has developed a ridiculous habit.  He bites his nails!!!!!  He likes to chew on those bad boys when we are trying to go to sleep.  It makes me cringe. . . . . any ideas about how to put an end to this nonsense?

Re: eww!

  • You could try spraying bitter spray onto his paws.

  • My log licks her paws because of her allergies.  Maybe he has something that you need to have the vet checked out?  I have allergy pills for her but still have to tell her to leave it when her allergies are bad.  Sometimes her paws smell like Doritos/Fritos when the bacteria is a little high.  Do his?
  • Nope, no smell. He's not licking them, he is full on gnawing on the nails. He yanks hard enough that the whole foot moves. It is so gross.
  • I read that if you do not exercise your dog enough it becomes a nervous habit because their minds aren't being occupied with something else. There are also allergies and separation anxiety. I would ask your vet though, if you do exercise your dog regularly and he doesn't have separation anxiety.

  • My Olive does the same thing.  But she only does it when they are starting to get a little long.  Maybe they need to be cut?  I honestly think that Olive does this because she hates getting her nails cut!  She actually needs to be sedated to have it done!
  • My dog does that too, but only on his back paws. I think its because like Olive he doesn't like to get his nails trimmed and its his way of avoiding the extra stress.
