I think more like an over all feel of what you're trying to go for is what they mean. We're going for casual country or people with a beach feel. I know a lot of ladies say themes belong with proms, not weddings lol. I guess another thought is like black tie, business casual or laid back casual

Our 'theme' is 'simple, but elegant'--I agree that it is more the feel/style we want instead of a theme like a kid's birthday party would have.

No need for a theme at all. After all it's not a child's birthday party.  As long as it has similar colors and feel throughout that is more than fine.

My theme is: "We're getting married."

Themes are not necessary/expected. A level of formality is all you need to envision.

Yeah, we don't have a theme. Our colors are black, white, and silver. That's the look we're going for. There will be little touches of things that Jason likes so it isn't all about me...My garters are University of Michigan, the groom's cake is a University of Michigan "M" (a surprise for him), etc. Little things like that, but no actual theme.

What theme??? The theme if there is one, is hello we are in love and getting married. I'm not having a groom's cake, . It's a waste of money. So yeah themes aren't a necessity, and neither are groom's cakes.

Maybe  they are just trying to figure out what they should wear?

Most people are anti theme, and understandably so- they can definitely be overdone. Some kind of creep up on you- I didn't start with a theme but since it's near the beach I thought it would be cute to decorate invites and centerpieces with seashells, and it kind of grew from there. It's not in your face, just a recurring item I guess.

Similarly I went to a wedding with a tasteful peacock theme- just the colors and some peacock feathers repeatedly used for decoration, but not over the top.

You don't need a theme. Think of a good phrase that will describe your wedding (black tie? Country? beach casual?) and tell them that.
