NWR: Credit Card Fraud Rant

I will cut a long story short. My 19yo cousin has been staying with us over the summer holiday (9 weeks) without any form of financial contribution. On top of saving for the wedding FI and I have been covering ALL of his living expenses. He got a bit of money from my Aunt & Uncle in December and selfishly spent it all on himself.

In December FI got an unauthorized charge against his credit card which we had been using to pay vendors in Vegas. Ofcourse we thought we had been scammed, disputed the charge and canceled the card.

Fast forward to yesterday we got the summary from FIs bank fraud investigation unit which showed that my cousin basically stole FIs credit card for an online purchase. At this point we reviewed FIs statements which showed that my cousin stole FIs card (the new reissued card) again in January for another online transaction.

Ofcourse the twit denied it even though the evidence was clear. Eventually he admitted but only after FI threatened to press charges for 2 counts of Fraud. We asked cousin to move out and notified his parents (my aunt and uncle who are invited to the wedding).

Im so uncontrollably pissed. Not only does FI have to cancel his card again, we have been ripped off to the tune of $250 AND who knows whether he stole cash when he was digging around FIs wallet. Having him in our home has cost us heaps of money in food and increased bills which we could have put on the wedding.

Im also worried that things will be awkward between FI and my aunt/uncle at the wedding. This whole situation is just gutting and not what we need 72 days out :-(

End Rant

Re: NWR: Credit Card Fraud Rant

  • I completely sympathize. My soon to be step son (17) stole from me over the summer. I'm still pissed. Hopefully your FI can understand it isn't any fault of your aunt or uncle. The kid is just a twit.

  • I'd press charges, but that's probably just the business owner in me speaking.  If the chargeback was successful, even though you know who made the charge, the merchant is basically getting screwed here unless your cousin is made to pay them for the merchandise or services that were effectively stolen.  I have an online business and get screwed with chargebacks all the time; I'm not only out my merchandise, but at least in the US, we're also hit with a $15 chargeback fee for the 'privilege' of being charged back.

  • I would press charges. i just don't put up with bs from idiots. guess im old and cynical. If my daughter pulled this id sue her.
  • This rant is very justified! How incredibly frustrating that somebody would do that after you have shown such generosity. In no way should your FI feel awkward around his aunt and uncle. He has done nothing wrong!
