Just decided to go onto Facebook (I know, it's all Super Bowl talk right now), and what do I see? Not one, but TWO freaking GoFundMe things for people's weddings. One of the couples, they are ALREADY MARRIED. And now they're asking for $20,000 for their "dream wedding". Um excuse me? STOP THE MADNESS.

I'm confused. Is go fund me a donation thing? Like not even asking for honeymoon funds now they want you to donate for a wedding you may or may not be invited too?

Judging from their photos (I only know the girl in this couple, and haven't seen her for maybe 2 years..she's known this guy maybe 8 months?), it seems couple two might also already be married, though I don't know for sure since I don't really talk to them.

Yeah it's a donation website. People can set them up for anything and any amount. Some people beg for people to pay for their student loans, their car payments, even their groceries.

I have only ever seen one that I actually understood: it was for my brother's best friend who wants to adopt a child. She has preeclampsia and HELLP and unfortunately lost her first child and is unable to ever give birth herself.

ETA: I just did a zip code search near me and I see a lot of sick/ hurt animals and that's super sad. But then I saw several people who want money for them to travel. I can't afford a trip to the Bahamas myself, so why would I give you $ for that?

People are supporting this. As in, in less than 3 hours the $20k couple has 86 shares, 15 likes, and $220 donated. I mean, I love the girl-she's very talented at her work and a very fun person. I will, however, never donate to something like this. You are married. You do not need $20,000 for a "dream wedding" because you already had a wedding. And that's a lot of fucking money to be begging for. Why do you need so much? I'm having my dream wedding in August for $5,000 of my own damn money.

There have been a couple of GoFundMe type things posted that I can understand and even sympathize with - people with severe health problems and have been dropped by their insurance companies, setting up funds for children who suddenly orphaned, helping people rebuild their homes after major disasters, etc. I feel like these situations are not the selfish "I want things I can't otherwise afford but I deserve to have them anyway" kind, and I often donate a few dollars if it is within my budget. But I will never fund something like a fake wedding for someone. I would never expect or ask anyone to give me money for things like that because it just comes off as being very selfish.

Yes to all of this. Some of the stories I can totally understand and feel terrible for those people. I have donated to family friends for things like that before. But not fake weddings. And it really pisses me off that they aren't admitting to already being married on their little site. Instead it's a bunch of "Oh pity us! We absolutely need to have this extravagant party!"

UGH I can't stand these, at least not for the wedding-type stuff. I've actually never seen on posted on my own timeline, but some friends have shared them off of other people's posts and it drives me batty. I understand it for truly charitable reasons, such as health problems or the death of a loved one, great. But not for your wedding or dream vacation, and ESPECIALLY not for a PPD.

I say, if she wants you to donate to a wedding she can't afford, why can't you ask her for a donation to a car you can't afford?

I really really hate people trying to raise money for their first world problem.

I donate money to help people in need. I donate to my church which uses it for many things including helping truly needy and/or homeless people. I donate to organizations that help people in third-world countries living on a dollar a day. I do not donate money to frivolous wants.

I had someone a couple months ago post a GoFundMe for fixing her car and another for a girl asking for money to pay her college tuition. I just shake my head. If you're an adult, you should be making the adult decision to quit college and find a job to pay for your college or car. Or, you should borrow money or whatever adults do in order to, you know, BE AN ADULT.

I donated to a girl I worked with who was running for her Dad who had pancreatic cancer (and unfortunately passed away a year or so ago).

That I certainly don't mind doing but donate to your wedding fund or other crap? Forget it. @lovesclimbing I couldn't agree more about not donating to "frivolous wants." When there's something that I or FI wants, we make sacrifices in other areas or I pick up some extra hours with kids I watch after the school day. You can make it work somehow without imposing shamelessly on others.

IVF? yikes, that's pretty personal. That's like a couple explaining every day that they're trying to get pregnant and how they are going about doing it. Way to personal and don't care enough.

On a fun note, while it wasn't a gofundme, last night my FFIL's girlfriend asked that we all get her and FFIL ipads for Christmas and pointed to each of us, including FI's aunt and uncle, saying how much we could give. I laughed and said, "and while you're at it, everyone donate to our wedding." His aunt understood my sarcasm but I don't think FFIL's gf did. She was pretty drunk though so I am going to chalk it up to being a little to liberal with the wine.

Yes!! I posted very similar on here a few months ago. A guy from my high school heard fighting outside his house so he went out and saw a domestic fight in which the guy was beating the woman. Guy I know tried to step in and help the woman whom he's NEVER met and the man shot him!! He was about to start a new job in a few days so he was just between health insurance coverage and racked up about 100k in surgeries and hospital stays. When I heard about it, I immediately went on to donate (his sister set up the fund). And while I was on the site I stumbled upon a whole wedding/ honeymoon section and was SO appalled! None of them even had a sob story like losing a leg in the army or anything they were just like "We want money, we want to go to Hawaii".

I'll give my spare change coming out of the grocery store to the kid selling cookies. I'll donate food to local shelters. A friend lost her job and was freaked- I took her out to eat, got her calm, and helped her focus on getting a new position. I'll take my gently used/no longer fits work attire to abused women shelters for interview clothes. I'll put together care packages of home baked goodies and send them to soldiers I'll never meet.

I will never go on one of those sites and give someone money for a "want" not a "need." Guess I'm a bitch :-)

I got an email this morning for a photo booth company and they have a "Pitch In" option, i.e. you only have $300 budgeted for your photo booth, so you ask your friends and family to pitch in to help you pay for the rest. Gross. (Website: http://www.socialshotsphoto.com/pitchin/) So vendors are jumping on the band wagon of people being entitled to have something they want, without having to pay for it.
