Destination Wedding, Engagement Photos at Home?

We live in Chicago but we are getting married in Cape Cod Mass on the beach, nautical theme. We aren't able to make it out there to do Engagement photos first. It doesn't seem 'on theme' or consistent to do an engagement photo shoot in downtown Chicago, but we still want to do engagement photos.
I'd love to hear from other brides who have done this or are doing this, and where they did their photos so that it didn't scream CITY when you're getting married at the beach (or whatever the case may be).
Thanks!

  • we are doing our engagement photos at home too and getting married in mexico. I ont think it needs to be a beachy feel since you are representing the people you are (in the city you are living)

I would take photos by a lake to have a bit of the feeling? :) just an idea

  • You are going to have a ton of beach photos from your wedding. I don't think city photos are a bad idea.

We are getting married in Italy, and yeah, I thought about tying that in somehow to the engagement photos, but in practice it all seemed so cheesy. Instead, we went to the theater where we first met, and had our photos taken there.

Maybe you have a first date place, or a place that is just special to you in a different way. Chicago is so rich for photography. If you don't have any particular special places, go to your favorite food spots, or better yet, ask your photog where they like to shoot.
  • We're getting married in the Caribbean but did standard fall in the midwest engagement pictures. I don't think the theme of the wedding really needs to carry through for engagement pictures but if you really wanted to I'm sure you could get some nice shots at navy pier kind of blending the two themes and even capture the cool little light house in the background.
  • I agree. We are doing our engagement photos at home in a park I grew up next to. I thought about waiting until the weather gets warmer and having them done at the beach but we're going to have so many pictures at the beach anyway. I think it's better to have your engagement photos in a different location.
  • Our engagement photos are not at all related to our wedding theme.  We are doing nautical theme and getting married on a cruise ship and our engagement photos were typical photos in a park setting. I would think that Chicago would have some great areas for photo shoots.  And if you really want to bring in some of the nautical theme, why not get photos taken near the lake? They have some gorgeous beaches on Lake Michigan. Or I would think there is a boat dock somewhere on the lake.  Maybe you can find someone that will let you do photo shoot on or near their boat, maybe with anchor or tie offs in the photo as props.  Maybe do a couple nautical theme photos to include in your STD or whatever, but do a lot of non-nautical shots to frame. You will have an abundance of beach photos from your wedding, so a little variety is nice.

  • We are thinking of just getting a small basic package at JCPenneys or something. We are already spending so much on our wedding and photography there. Is anyone else just doing basic pictures or is everyone going and getting professional location pictures.
