Hurricane honeymoon

Ok so I'm the dummy who books her wedding during hurricane season and still expects the tropical honeymoon lol. Suggestions? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Re: Hurricane honeymoon

  • Aruba, Curacao, and Grenada are located outside of the hurricane belt if you want the Caribbean. Maybe Costa Rica or Hawaii? Also, the South Pacific (French Polynesia, Fiji, or Cook Islands) if your budget and time allows.
  • I just told another poster this....my mom is a travel agent, she has been for 25 years so she really knows her shit. She has no apprehensions sending me to Jamaica in September. She and my father go every fall and they have never incurred a "trip ruining" hurricane. She said it may for an hour each afternoon, but who doesn't need a nap in the shade each afternoon? Honestly, she could have sent me anywhere in the world and she had no problem choosing Jamaica so I wouldn't worry about it. Get insurance just in case.

  • Thank you!! I saw your post on the other board and saw you suggested San Diego which is funny because we also have a tight budget and my fiance was suggesting that but I was apprehensive. Thanks for the tip :)
  • There are a ton of posts about this topic on this board. Hurricanes suck, but as Jenna mentioned, you can go to the Caribbean every year of your life in September and maybe you might be affected once. Also, it's Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire that are considered the safest from hurricanes and September is hurricane season for Hawaii as well! So, purchase the insurance, enjoy your trip, and use the insurance to get your money back in the off chance you are affected!

  • I went on a southern Caribbean cruise in October for our honeymoon and my mom was on the same cruise 3 weeks prior in September. I don't think either of us ever considered a hurricane as an issue. Buy insurance if you're concerned. Cruise ships won't go or they'll travel out of the storm if there's reason for concern. Hurricanes don't happen overnight...you can predict them a number of days in advance.

just FYI: grenada is within the belt. bonaire is the B of the ABC islands. Costa rica has hurricanes and so does hawaii (pacific for west coast of CR and HI is until mid october. For east coast of CR it's the caribbean season.

  • Whatever you do- buy insurance! We were supposed to go to Jamaica in 2012 and had to cancel it due to Hurricane Sandy hitting Maryland and our flight being cancelled! It's such a small chance of something happening but our insurance was definitely worth it as we got all of our money back except for the $80 we spent on the insurance (which was nothing compared to the amount of the trip!)
