Mismatched Groom/Groomsmen Attire?

We are trying to keep costs down as much as we can for ourselves and our wedding party, so we are trying not to be super fussy about matching exactly, etc. Since my FH just got a very  nice, expensive, charcoal grey suit last year, he is planning on wearing that for the wedding, rather than buying or renting another one. However, we know that several of the groomsmen already own black suits (none own a grey one like FH's).  Would it look off to have the groom in a grey and the groomsmen wear black, so that the guys who already have suits can wear them? Does anyone have any photos where the groom is wearing a different colour than his guys??

The rule is that if the groom wears a suit, then the other men in the wedding party must wear suits, too.  Color does not matter; they do not need to match.  In the old days, most men owned one good dark blue suit.  Your plans sound just fine.

  • I'd say go for it! I've seen lots of pictures of grooms and groomsmen not totally matching, and casual is becoming very popular these days. Weddings are so individualized now that few people expect them all to be cookie cutter - so do what you would like and don't be afraid of people disliking it!

  • Thanks for the replies, those pictures are super helpful. I have such a hard time visualizing these things!
  • Yes, that is absolutely fine. I personally hate matching groomsmen anyway - the suits rarely fit and the men often look as if they've been dressed up by a little girl playing wedding with her dolls. Letting the groomsmen to wear their own suits looks much more stylish and masculine, IMO.

We are asking the men in our wedding party to wear dark suits, and I think they will looking dashing. :)
  • Even if they are wearing their own suits (of whatever color), I would tell them all to wear a white shirt. And if you want, you can pick out coordinating ties (not matching--I think that would look weird with mismatched suits, but maybe all the same color palette). Or just ask them to all wear a "red tie--plain or any pattern" or something like that would be cute, too, I think. (you pick the color, obviously, red was just the example!)
