"thank goodness for all the gifts you will get"

Some people! We had talked to my realtor about the possibility of selling our house this spring to look for a larger one. She said we really need a modest kitchen update if we want to make any money off the house. (It's true, our kitchen is original 1950's hardly functional and really drags down the value). She just emailed me asking if we had started on the kitchen yet. I replied that we want to do the kitchen to get the most return and since we're currently planning and paying for our wedding, the kitchen will have to wait a year and we won't be ready to list this year. She actually wrote back "Weddings are so expensive- thank goodness for all the gifts you will get! You should get money to recoup what you've spent and use it on the kitchen!" I don't even know how to reply...like ok, I'm not getting married for gifts and I certainly don't expect to receive even half of what I'm spending, but thanks??

  • Um... No.

We spent $14k on our wedding (with some money coming from both parents) and we received roughly $2,000 in gifts (including physical gifts received at the shower).  Definitely not a fund raiser...  lol

  • You're just the wrong decent.  On that Bravo show The Newlyweds the First Year, the Greek couple spent a good part of one episode counting out the cash they received from everyone.  The husband even called someone that gave below the "standard" dollar amount cheap on TV.  I forgot what the "standard" was but want to say at least $2k.

I'm still trying to figure out how I can become Greek.
  • I would not use that Realtor. Find someone else.

  • I roll my eyes at everyone who tells me I'll make a ton of money at my wedding.image

  • Ugh!  I wonder if these people are out of touch because they have never planned a wedding or if that was what was expected at theirs.  When FI went out a few weekends ago, he saw our mutual acquaintance who ALWAYS brings up our wedding when we see him.  He pries us for date, location, and details, having basically invited himself on numerous occasions.  FI finally said, "We are having a very small wedding, mostly family."  His reply?  "The more people you invite, the more presents you'll get."

  • I know some people who've made those kinds of comments to me didn't pay for their own weddings - so of course, they made money! FI and I are paying for everything ourselves (including attire for the WP because we don't want them to spend money on stuff they may not wear again), so there is NO WAY we'd get enough gifts to cover what we're spending. I mean, unless people start handing us suitcases full of cash.

How awesome would that be?  I mean, it's probably mob money and they'd expect favors...but still!
  • It sounds to me like someone is trying to get you to list your house quicker.
  • I hate when some salespeople get so caught up in convincing you to do xyz that they have tactless word vomit.

Anything to get you to renovate and list ASAP to get her commission!

Can't blame her- the salesperson motto ABC- always be closing. I could never work on commission, even in college when I worked for a month at Bath & Body Works they fired me because I wouldn't push people to try/ buy more lotions LOL
