I hate drunk drivers *Sad*

This happened in So Cal yesterday, and honestly it pisses me the fuck off (pardon my french) that it did.  I'd like to think of myself as a loving and forgiving person, but when I hear this kind of thing it makes me sick. It's been all over the news and I seriously hope the driver gets locked up forever.  You don't take 6 lives and go on to lead a life of your own.

(You are welcome to disagree with me, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I really shouldn't be so angry, but it was very close to home)

  • I consider drunk driving that results in death a premeditated murder.
  • That is horrific. And no, no one is entitled to think that drunk driving is acceptable.

Oh I didn't mean to imply that, I just meant that I was understanding if someone didn't agree that locking up a drunk driver forever is acceptable.

But still, it's so freaking obvious that drunk driving is irresponsible, therefore if you take that many lives then you don't have the right to enjoy yours.  So freaking irresponsible.

  • with any luck, they'll lock him up and throw away the key! That also hits very close to home, my dad lost his best friend to a drunk driver.
  • That sucks =(  My grandpa was killed by a drunk driver before my brother and I were born.  I hear stories like this and wonder who else was denied the same because of someone's carelessness.

  • I grew up in an area that has some of the highest number of drunk driving incidences/fatalities in the country, and I never get over it. Everyone I know from my home region has lost at least one friend or relative to a drunk driver (usually at a young age), and it's horrific.

There is never an excuse. FI has a relative who was recently arrested for a DUI, and it made me sick (I wish they had gotten jail time, but they didn't). I lost any respect I had for that person, and they'll never get it back. I will never understand why having a few drinks and wanting to drive yourself home (or wherever) is more important than the safety and the life of someone else, or even yourself. It is honestly the most selfish thing a person can do IMO, hands down.

I will also never apologize for the way I feel about it. I lost friends as a teenager, I saw families torn apart by grief, and a whole community picking up the pieces time and time again. I don't care who you are or why you're doing it -- I have no qualms about asking you what the fuck is wrong with you for thinking it's okay to drive, even after 2 drinks.

  • That is incredibly sad. It's not hard to be responsible when you drink. Call a taxi, walk home, call a friend or family member but don't get in the god damn car and drive!

  • a year and a half ago there was a 20 year old man driving drunk who ended up killing 5 high school football guys, and the 6th was in a coma for 6 months, who fled the scene. 2 year jail sentence. Welcome to Canada (snarl!)
  • In law school I did an externship where I prosecuted DUI's on behalf of the state. All of mine were misdemeanor cases (pull overs, minor damage to cars, etc), but I attended a hearing for a vehicular manslaughter case caused by a drunk driver.

I will never forget the look on the faces of the victim's mother and brother while the defense attorney argued for a driving permit for work purposes- this guy was drunk at 2/3 in the afternoon, pulled out onto a road, went through a light pole, and slammed into the back of this woman's car. Her 9 year old was home recovering during the hearing. (broken back, legs, and torn ligaments) The 6 year old was killed instantly on impact. And he wanted a driving permit so he could go on jobs outside of the immediate area?

My externship ended before the case went to trial, but he was eventually convicted and sent to prison. From what I've heard, he tried to apologize to the mother, but she wouldn't even look in his direction.
