The act of moving sucks

At least the destination is going to be awesome, but man the next 8-9 days are going to be crazy.    We still haven't even secured a mover yet.  Yikes.

Hope everyone is having a good Tuesday.

Re: The act of moving sucks

  • Moving is the worst! I've moved about 10 times in my adult life. And I'm never moving again.
  • This is our 3rd out-of-state/territory move since June 2011. Plus one in-town move in NOLA (just down one floor).   I'm ready to sit still for a while.

  • It's true! I hate packing, so I made DH do it last time we moved. (I unpacked.)

Just remember that soon enough, you'll be on the other side.
  • We are getting full packing and unpacking.  Except for the stuff we are taking with us to temp housing.

So I've been hounding DH for some information on this short term housing.   I need internet to work, so I need to know if there is some?  if yes, do I need to call to get it hooked up?  If no, what mobile company works better so I can get a usb modem?    Do we need bedding?  Stuff like that.

Yesterday I asked again and he was so annoyed at me.  Finally he got a hold of someone who finally answered some of the thing I needed to know, but also found out there is no TV.  DH was all, "we need to bring our small TV because I need TV to sleep"

See DH, your wife isn't really all the stupid trying to find out before we get there one what we need is she?

  • That's nice! Are you (or your DH) military?

I got the internet hooked up in our new place before we even moved in. MAMA NEEDS HER FACEBOOK!
  • No.   We met in the island. Then DH was transferred.   That ended badly so we ended up here in Indy.   He wanted to get into private clubs when this job came up.  After 3 months of interviews he was offered the job last Wednesday.   They want him there in just over 2 weeks.  Which is tough because he had to give 2 weeks and it's takes 2 days to drive in good weather.   As we know, this year has been everything but.

  • Yuck, I hate moving! Our office is going to be renovated in the next few weeks, and we are starting to pack up our cubicles to prepare for the painters/carpet guy. I abhor it. If I could pay someone to pack up all my stuff for me, I would. And I have a pretty Spartan cube. I don't even want to think about what it will be like to move out of my apartment.

  • Ugggghh I absolutely hated moving.  I had to pack my house myself and was very very sick the entire time (I was sick for about 3 months even after the move, where I had to unpack everything alone since FI worked more than me).  I drove 7 hours alone day 1 with my two dogs, and 8 the next day, and then I also had to buy our hotel room when FI's card got blocked for being out of state.  My situation when moving was terrible and I would never wish it on anyone.  But if you're getting movers, it will hopefully go much better!

  • I hate moving too; I've been doing it about every 9 months for the past three years. The worst is when you invariably lose things into the giant black hole of moving.

And now I'm marrying someone in the military...I have no idea what I'm doing with my life.

Hope you can find someone and be as relaxed as possible.

  • I feel your pain! FI and I just moved into our first home together this weekend. Everyone keeps congratulating me and asking if I'm excited to be a honeowner (which I really really am) but the past few days have been so chaotic and exhausting that it takes all I have just to smile and nod.

Hope your moving days go better than ours! We rented a moving truck and they didn't have the one we wanted, so they upgraded us to a bigger truck. That one ended up having a broken lift gate, so the only other option was the biggest truck they had. It was so big (tall), FI ripped out a power line attached to a neighboring house. Yep, a freaken power line. Now we're expecting a bill from the homeowners for the repairs.
  • Oh no Ashley.   Would insurance cover that?

  • @lyndausvi - I believe so. We're actually waiting for the homeowners to send us the bill so we can figure out if its best to go through insurance.

I see you're using movers since you're relocating (from another post). Sounds like you can avoid the hassle of the physical traveling of your things, but packing still sucks big time. Good luck!
  • we are having it fully packed also.    The company is willing to pay up to a certain amount and it fits the budget.  Woohoo.    We may have to pick up a little of our travel expenses, depending on how much gas we use, but it will be worth it.
