Immune Boosters

So I always thought I had a pretty solid immune system. Well I'm a teacher and this year has not been kind to me. I've battled a few really nasty colds and over this weekend had a cold, fever, aches, etc. the whole shebang and was out of work yesterday. I'm starting to think taking some immune boosters might be helpful. I know vitamin c and zinc can be good - but not sure about dosage? Any other recommendations??

  • Air born can be taken every 4 hrs. And has vitamin C. If I remember correctly it also has Zinc.
    Hope you feel better.
  • I've used airborn before, but I'm looking for something that I can take daily, long term...

  • I take Vitamin D daily, and a multi-vitamin with Calcium, Zinc, and Vitamin D in it.

I also drink Emergen-C (clicky) drinks 2-3x daily. They taste good, I like that they're warm, and they boost my immune system.

I also drink grapefruit juice every morning (I really love citrus), which I have found helps.

Anything that's fat-soluble will be fine -- whatever your body doesn't use you'll just pee out.

  • Pomegranate juice boosts your immune system. Citrus fruits, honey, herbal teas...

You can use oil of oregano for short periods. (About a month at a time.)
  • I swear by multivitamins.  I work in the medical field with sick people coughing and breathing on me all day long.  I have been surprisingly healthy since starting a multivitamin. Now I better go find some wood to knock on..

Echinacea is amazing for raising your immune system.  You can buy it in pill and tea form which you can take or drink several times throughout the week. If you do happen to get sick, echinacea can cut down the days that you are sick. I typically get sick for a week or two, but taking this supplement makes it so that I am sick only a few days.

You can buy it at the supermarket or drugstore. It's not too difficult to find. The tea is also widely available.

Emergen-C is also supposed to be very good but the smell and taste gives me a stomach ache. FH swears by it, though.

I take zinc tablets (not a multi-vitamin, but just pure zinc) and Vitamin D once a week. My vitamin D is a prescription, so given the dose, I only need to take it once a week. I can't remember the dose of the Zinc, but I bought the bottle at CVS and just take one tablet per the instructions on the bottle. When I feel particularly crappy, I'll take around 2000mg of Vitamin C in addition to the zinc. Probiotics also help as well!

  • I take Emergen-C and drink a ton of green tea as soon as I start feeling anything in my nose or throat (that's where it always starts for me).

  • I'm a school counselor so kids are always around me too.  I have an orange and 6-8 strawberries for breakfast every day (lots of Vitamin C) and I was never a multivitamin person but since July I've been taking One-a-Day Women's Prenatal vitamins (which are chocked full of essential nutrients).  Some mix of this regime has protected me from illness for over a year.  Not even a cold.  If I had to guess I'd say it's all the Vitamin C.  I hope you feel better soon!
  • As a few PP have mentioned, Echinacea & Zinc - both have done me well. And lots and lots of water! If you are into essential oils at all, there a great blend called Thieves (by Young Living) that is a godsend (diffuse, put a drop in water, &/or dilute with water and use as a disinfectant).

  • Every time I feel a bug coming on, I drink two Emergen-C vitamin packets per day for a few days. I have done it three times and have had a 100% success rate so far in not getting sick!

It's water soluble that you pee out, not fat soluble. C is water soluble so while it definitely is important for the immune system, excess is a waste. Same with B. Like others said, echinacea, zinc etc also help but don't go too crazy with it. Along with that, being healthy in general- good diet, exercise, low stress- will help the most. Have you had a flu shot?

  • Raw, unfiltered honey and cinnamon are anti microbial. I haven't been sick in almost a year, and I think it's because I've started eating that on my toast. I'm a teacher too.

I also take cinnamon supplements to balance out my blood sugar and hormones, but I think they help with the ickies too. Vitamin C and Zinc don't really help prevent colds, but they may help shorten them.
