  What Scribe said.  My first name is actually Mary.  I never go by Mary.  From the moment I was born my parents called me Maggie.  That is what everyone knows me as.  So I used Maggie on the invitation.  Even if my wedding was super formal I still would have used the name that I go by and that everyone knows.  And since I used my nickname we excluded middle names from the invitation.

  My full first name is Jacqueline. I love it, but the only time I use it is in legal or medical documents. Since everyone knows me as Jackie, would it be weird to use Jacqueline on the invitations? I've been doing mock-up invitations and I'm always putting my full name because to me, with my middle name, it sounds kind of elegant. But now I'm wondering if it would be weird for people to see "Jacqueline" when everyone only knows me as Jackie.

  Refer to my post.  Maggie is my nickname.  That is what I always go by and what everyone knows me as.  So for me to have used my first and middle name would have been odd not only for me but for all my friends.  In fact I have some friends/acquaintances that do not know that my first name is not actually Maggie.

  
  

  I feel that you should use whatever name is comfortable for you.  Same in your vows.  Why should I or anyone get married and the officiant and invite use a name that you yourself never use?

  My best friend HATES her first name and has gone by a nickname since she was about two. I'm fairly certain on her wedding invitations she used her nickname in place of her legal first name. Everyone knows her by her nickname and it would've been strange to use to her first name. It's completely fine to use whatever name your FI goes by and people are familiar with

  It really depends on what you are comfortable with.  I think if your nickname is a variation of your full name, like Jackie vs. Jacqueline, it really doesn't matter too much.  It's close enough that guests will know who it is.  But if you go by middle name or something completely different, like going by John vs. Charles, then I think it is best to use the name people know you by, because that could get confusing.

  Another option to consider: My sister is doing invites similar to this one and using their nicknames on top, then using their full, legal names in the smaller text.

  Never use initials on a formal wedding invitation.
  I used my legal name on my invitations, which is not the name I use socially.  My husband is known by his middle name, and we used his full legal name, too.
  You can do what you want, but I think that for formal occasions you should use your full legal name.  It isn't the end of the world if you use your nickname.
