wedding bands

FI and I were looking at bands and I saw an eternity band that I liked. He mentioned that a woman receives an eternity band for either first anniversary or the birth of the first child. Has anyone heard of this? I'm happy to find a simple band if that's proper etiquette. (Sometimes I find FI follows some wedding customs while ignoring others...)

You can definitely choose an eternity band for your wedding band.

ETA: check out the ring threads on the Chit Chat and Just Engaged boards, plenty of different wedding band styles there, including eternity.
  • I have heard of that, but it doesn't mean people are forbidden from having one as a wedding band instead. If you like it, you should get it!

  • I've heard that as well, but you should pick what you like!
I had originally picked out an eternity band, but ended up having my ring custom made to have the diamonds go only half-way around kind of like this image:

  • I have an eternity band! I had heard it was an anniversary thing but I really liked it on. I think I may get a second matching band for an anniversary present (DH suggested it for a big anniversary).

  • I have heard that (not the first anniversary part, but as an anniversary gift), but I don't know many people who have actually followed this "tradition". I've met more people who got an eternity band as their wedding band.

This is a tradition and in no way (i think anyway) an etiquette rule.  I think you should get what you like.  I was going to get a ring that had blue diamonds alternating with white diamonds until I tried it on.  Then it just didn't look quite right with my E-Ring (which I am going to keep wearing after the wedding).

When it comes to jewerly, especially the peices that you will be wearing everyday, I feel that it is a deeply personal choice, and that you should be able to get whatever it is that you want.  For me, my wedding band (which I just got so excited!!!) has nine stones that are channel set like my e-ring side stones.  For my friend, her wedding band is an eterinty band just covered in tiny diamonds!  My FSIL got a plain, stoneless band, and another woman I know has a completely different ring (it is like two rings that criss cross over and over to form small ovals, not sure what its called).

It's up to you what you want to get.  For me, it was important to find a ring that could be resized if I needed it to be and decided to go that route.  There are tons of choices, so just go to a local store and try them all on...when you find the right one you'll know!
