Interesting Article

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/02/12/record-share-of-wives-are-more-educated-than-their-husbands/

I was looking for the customer service information for my newspaper because they failed to deliver Sunday's paper and my eye got caught by a short article that linked the above piece.  Still looking for the customer service info, but I thought I would share this here.

Re: Interesting Article

  • Interesting. I'm more educated than FI. We make about the same now but I will likely be the breadwinner for the majority of our working lives.
  • I think it really depends on the couple. FI is very good with electronic stuff (Getting BA in Electrical Engineering) while I work doing CS at a M-F job, and he works full-time as well, while going to school FT.

I will add, that I am better with Grammar (Sometimes..) and English, Writing and Spelling than he is.

So I really can't say that in our particular situation, one is smarter than the other. Interesting article, though. :)

  • I find all of this stuff interesting because I majored in Sociology.

I am more educated than FI -- 6 years of university to his 3 years of college. I'm also more well-read than he is (he doesn't really care for books) and better with spelling/grammar, but he's WAY ahead of me when it comes to anything technical (other than computer stuff), repair work, and he reads the news religiously so he has me beat on current events. However, he makes about double what I do, so it's not as though all of that time in university got me further ahead salary-wise.

  • While my husband has an advanced degree and I only have an undergrad, I think we're pretty equal in terms of intelligence.  We have different skills that each of us are better at but we complement each other well.
  • FI has a double B.S I have a BFA. I started a Masters of Ed and teaching certification but didn't finish it.

I could have written this. I'm more educated than FI. He doesn't like to read. He's a little challenged when it comes to grammar and spelling. However, he runs his own business and makes way more money than me. He knows how to fix everything. And I mean everything.
  • FI has a PhD. I am almost finished with my 2nd Master's and am considering going for my PhD *at some point* i've been in school longer, so maybe that makes me more educated? ;)
  • DH is more "educated" than I am.  I've got 2 Bachelors and a bunch of other undergrad courses.  I've also started doing a couple of grade level classes, but haven't decided if I want to do a Masters yet.  DH did his Masters coursework but never did his thesis.  He got a job instead, and a Masters really doesn't do anything for him in his field/company.  I think we're both smart though.

  • FI has Associates and Bachelors degrees, while I have Bachelors and Masters degrees. FILs have offered to pay for FI to get his MBA, but he has zero desire to go back to school.

My salary is slightly higher than FI's, but hopefully we'll both have new jobs within the next year or so.  Like PPs said, we are equal in intelligence but we definitely have our strengths.

  • Same as most of you. I have a Bachelor's and FI only has a high school diploma. Growing up, my father had a college degree and wore suits every day and brought home the bacon so naturally I imagined my future husband to be the same way. Well, he's the opposite. He's a greasy mechanic and makes less than me and I don't care one bit. He has such a higher work ethic than I will ever have and I really admire that, he's really good at what he does, he's very intelligent and has a milion other wonderful qualities that I love!

I have some friends in their late 20's who complain to me about being single and I can see why...they have these checklist standards like "must have a college degree" and they use that to write people off without giving them a chance. You can't do that, at the end of the day who they are as a person is more important than they job they work. Not to mention FI's best friend is an electrician who only attended trade high school yet electrical work is so complicated that he makes double what I make at my cushy office job!! So he would fail some people's "list" even though he is doing way better than some of us with degrees!

  • While FI has his BA and I have my MED, FI makes more than I do and always will (unless I decide to teach in a public school some day).  We've got our own strengths educationally, so it's a nice balance.
