Honeymoon flight is really early...

My FFIL generously offered to buy our plane tickets for our honeymoon. FI gave him the dates, but didn't specify what time would be good.  Well, the tickets are bought, and we'll have to leave the hotel by 5:30 or 6 AM the morning after the wedding to catch our flight!  Anyone else have a really early wakeup call the day after the wedding?

Re: Honeymoon flight is really early...

  • We did! We also had a morning wedding which helped, but it was still 10:30 before we got to bed... We had to get up at 4:00 to leave by 5:00 to get to the airport. We just slept the first leg of the trip. It was worth it to not "waste" a day of the honeymoon traveling. If we had taken a later flight we wouldn't have arrived at the resort until after 8:00...

  • He probably did it to save money, but I feel for you-that is a gross time to have to leave :(

Depending on where they live and where they are going there may be limited flight options...

  • Make sure you have everything for your HM packed and double checked.  Also make sure to print out your boarding passes and you have your passports and all other travel IDs ready and easily accessible.

Yeah, that early sucks, but if you are prepared then all you need to do is wake up, throw on some comfy clothes a pair of sunglasses and grab your bags and go.

  • It will be nice to get to St. Thomas early. I think you're right, @photokitty, that he wanted to give us the most time there that he could because we also have a late return flight. I'm totally fine with that one :)
  • My sister in October did.  Her reception ended at 11, their alarm for their flight was at 3:30 am!  My sister was 100% packed for the HM before leaving her apartment.
  • Ugh that sucks! I am not a morning person. . .

  • We are taking a red-eye so we don't waste a whole "day" of the honeymoon traveling... this way we just sleep through the flight. Leaving on a red-eye Sunday night.

Just make sure you are packed, checked in online, and keep visions of the beach in your mind!! :)

  • it sucks, but it is not the worst thing that could happen.  That may have been the best flight option so it is what it is.  ditto PPs, be packed and ready to go so you can just wake up and go. You can sleep on the plane.

  • Personally, I love early flights, but that's because I am so terrified of flying. So I essentially stay up the entire night, do any last minute packing, online check in, triple checking of everything,  pop some sleeping pills at the airport, and sleep my entire flight lol. Think of it this way though, the earlier you leave your destination, the earlier you will be on the sandy beaches of St Thomas soaking in that sun :)

  • Stay up celebrating till your flight and then sleep on the beach!!  :D

  • @tcnoble where are you going? Normally red eye is a bad idea only because hotels don't let you check in until 4pm so when you arrive tired at 8am you're kinda screwed.

  • I often take early flights.  It gives you plenty of time to get rebooked if your flight is cancelled or delayed.  I have all sorts of cancelled flight stories.

  • I've never flown, but I'm told earlier flights tend to depart on time, so we booked our anniversary trip to Puerto Rico such that we'll be leaving for the airport at 4am and departing around 7. I never sleep the night before a big trip anyway.

  •  Our wedding was on a Saturday, and we left for our HM on Monday. We had to be up at 3AM, and on a 6AM flight! My only advice is to be fully packed, and ready for it before your wedding day. That way you're not scrambling the night of, or very first thing in the morning. Double check what you have packed, and make sure all of your tickets/passports etc, are all in order, and where you will remember them!

We are flying from Vegas to PC with a layover :( so not only the time change, our 11pm flight doesn't land in PC until around 1pm (based on current flights - waiting for March 2015 schedules) so we figure by the time we get through the airport and transfer to the hotel, we should be close to check in, if not we can enjoy a drink while we wait! :)

Some of the nicer hotels I've been to will let you leave a bag at the front counter if you are there before check-in or after check-out.

St Thomas flights tend to leave the states early from the hubs, if you are at a non-hub it means you leave even earlier.    About 1-1.5 hours  after they arrive to STT they fly out with the departing  guests.

there are a few jets who fly in later. Miami to STT has a flight leaving around 5pm and  I think delta out of ATL might also have a later night flight, but for the most part the majority of the jets arrive in STT from 12-3.  Which means you have to leave the states early, especially if you are not at a hub.

Oh maybe they will have better schedules next year...I would never do a layover more than 2.5 hours.

  • I prefer early flights. The airports tend to be less packed and there is a better chance of leaving on time.

  • We haven't purchased flights yet, but we're considering a red eye (flight leaves at 11pm).

It's like an 18 hour trip or something absurd though, and I imagine that the hotel will accommodate is with early check in if we arrange ahead of time.

Depends on the place.  Our Amsterdam hotel did. Our safari lodge did not, Paris hotel did.

You have to remember that more than likely guests will be in the room the night before.  Check-out isn't until 10-12.  Add in cleaning time, well it's just not always possible.  We just got lucky in Amsterdam and Paris.  The other times I was in Paris I was not as lucky.

  • How long is your flight? If it's 8+ hours I would pack a neck pillow, eye mask, ear plugs, and pop a Tylenol PM to sleep through it.

The hotel we're staying at is pretty notorious for their great customer service.

But the plan is to really just drop off bags and then wander the beach. Which shouldn't be an issue regardless.

This. Sounds ideal to me, actually, other than the fact I would like to get breakfast with people the morning after the wedding. But I'd happily give that up for a honeymoon!

I've never had a problem getting hotels to hang onto my luggage, even when it's just a super 8 or something. I've frequently left them to go to explore before check in or after check out when I've had later travel arrangements.

They layover is less than 2 hours - I think only 1.5 hours. But with the time change it will put us in PC at a nice time I think! :)

  • I still think the holding of the luggage for a few hours is kind of crappy. When I get off a long flight, I want to get to the room, take my shoes off, get a drink, brush my teeth, relax for 30 minutes before I change into my bathing suit and hit the beach. It's kinda crappy to change in a public restroom and have your purse with you and stuff but I can understand if the flight is like half price it may be worth it.

  • We are but we are going from Florida to Hawaii so most of the day is flying.  I plan on sleeping the entire time (with the help of some Benadryl).
