Gift for FI

I'd really like to give FI a gift on the day of our wedding. My sister gave her H cufflinks...but that's really not a good option for FI. He's in IT and RARELY has to dress up for work. His go-to every day is jeans and a polo with tennis shoes. On that note...I'd like to get him a watch. But...I know nothing about watch brands or choosing something that's really good quality. He's kind of nerdy so something with cool gadgets would be more interesting to him than a watch that has diamonds circling the watch face. I think he even expressed interest once in a watch where you could see all the gears working. Does anyone have any ideas on brands that I should start looking in to? I don't have a particular budget in mind...I'm comfortable with spending $500 to $700....but probably no more than $1200. I really like the idea of watch over a gift related to his hobbies (he's super in to woodcraft and amateur photography) because I could get a watch engraved with a message from me and our wedding date or something like that. Granted...I'm also considering having the inside of his wedding ring engraved so engraving on a gift isn't SUPER necessary. Plus a watch is easier to present to him on our wedding day than something like a table saw....

  • Citizen. Either one of the zillions of Eco-Drives (charges by light) or they have a Signature Collection that includes automatics (powered by movement, you can see the gears on the back of the watch). Very nice watches and last 10-20 years.

I got my H a Citizen watch for our wedding day. The proximity model. It syncs to your phone & uses blue tooth to automatically change time zones, (even though it's not digital), it vibrates when you get a txt, call etc. It has some nerdy/neat features. I bought his from Peoples Jewellers, & it cost me around $500-$600. They come with warranty, but you can also get extended through Peoples. (I always recommend going with extended)! :)

A couple of years ago I also bought my H a pocket watch from Ben Moss jewellers. You can see the gears through the back, and I was also able to get it engraved. I can't exactly remember how much I spent, but it wasn't as much as the Citizen one. Both are really nice though!

     Good luck!

  • Thanks to both of you! I'll have to check out which retailers in my area carry Citizen so I can see them in person. The website is nice but it's still helpful to talk one on one with someone about the differences between Watch A and Watch B.

  • I'm going to get FI a watch as well; he LOVES watches.  I love the ones that PPs suggested, they sound awesome.  FI usually likes Armani because they have clean lines (which he loves).

Let us know if you find anything cool when you check them out at the store!

  • I got my FI a Bulova watch from Zales for around $500 for Christmas.  Like your FI, he is not very fancy and enjoys woodworking and is an electrician so is interested in how things work, so I got him a watch that has a see-through face so he can watch all the gears moving.  Very cool.  He LOVES it!
I think a watch is a great idea for a wedding gift.  Good luck finding the right one!
  • Thanks everyone!

I did some looking around this week and I think I'm going to get him this (LINK) watch from Victorinox. It's Swiss made and is an automatic so there aren't any batteries to die ever. I really fell in love with Tag Heuer but they are WAY out of budget...so that may end up being a 10th anniversary gift someday.
